Is wireless available on the MOXF series? I seem to recall reading somewhere it was, but I can find no direct mention of it in the manuals?

No, wireless is not available on the MOXF, only the top-of-the-line Motif XF series.

Okay thx- so if I want wireless I have to spend another $2000!!!

My bad, I must have misread some information somewhere.

BM, can you (if possible) say whether this function could be added at a later date by Yamaha, or is the structure of the OS on the MOXf series such that it actually can not be done?

That would be a hardware update, not a software or firmware update.
My 99.999% accurate guess is - no. Not going to happen.

I don’t have any inside information, but I suspect that whether WiFi capability will be made available on the MOXF is more of a marketing decision than anything else. The Motif XF didn’t have wireless operation when it was first introduced, it was added with an OS update - the additional hardware needed is an external USB WiFi adapter. As long as the MOXF can read the data at the USB port, it would seem wireless should be possible. However, if Yamaha gave the MOXF every capability of the XF, considering the price difference, who would buy an XF?

@ Dave - okay thx
@ 5pin - There is still sh@$t-loads missing on a MOXF compared to a Motif XF, adding wireless would not make one bit of difference to purchasers. Even down to the light (very) plastic casing on the MOXF!

But thanks guys for the replies. Look like I might try and hunt a XS88, or XF 88 second hand. Only just bought this so I will have to cop a loss. Stores out here don’t have the same return deals as you guys have in the US :(

I didn’t mean to suggest that you were asking for all the features of the XF to be made available on the MOXF, but I’ve already read or heard of so many requests that if they were all fulfilled, the two models would be the same. :-)

Manufacturers make models with different levels of features in order to fill niches in the market. I remember back several years ago when Fluke had a series of digital multimeters with a range of pricing. It became known that the least expensive meter in the series could have features added by installing a few “missing” diodes. That is, the cheap meter had the features of the more expensive models, but they were intentionally disabled so that customers could choose price versus performance. You might think that a corporation doing that isn’t being fair to their customers, but that’s what capitalism is all about. In reality, by Fluke being able to use the same chips in all of those meters, it lowered the price for buyers of all the different models - and yes, increased Fluke’s profits, I’m sure.

If wireless is important to you, I’d suggest not getting an XS, since that capability wasn’t made available for that model.

May I ask what aspect of wireless you feel you need?

Thx 5pin - I can certainly see and understand your way of thinking on it :-)

It is just that in my view, if Yamaha want us to buy iPad apps to run with these boards (and I am sure I have read BM encouraging folks to do so) then surely they could provide ALL the tools needed for running the apps on an ipad?

What if I need the 30 pin connector for another task? Means the app is useless as I cannot then use the i-MX dongle! This is just one example.

Thx for the heads-up on the XS not being wi-fi enabled...makes it even more exxy! Although in the end it’s my fault for misunderstanding what I read, it still would be nice to have it.

After all they (Yamaha) do provide the to device port, which afaik, is not on either the MOX or the XS.

I can certainly appreciate why you’d like to have the capability. I’m not always able to get the top-of-the-line model of some things, but I like when many of its features “trickle down” to the lower priced model that I’m buying. I figure that the people who bought the high-end model with all the bells and whistles paid for much of the manufacturer’s research and design costs, and helped make the cheaper model possible. The MOXF is a bargain, considering just how much of the XF found its way into it.

The TO DEVICE (and TO HOST) ports aren’t limited to the XF and MOXF - the XS and MOX also have them. In addition, both the MOX and MOXF include audio via USB, while the XS and XF only have MIDI capability with USB - so not everything that’s desirable is exclusively on the more expensive models.

Oh don’t misunderstand, I agree, the MOXF is phenomenal value! And I like everything about it (apart from the casing -but meh, they gotta cut somewhere!! so that’s fine)

I just would have thought something as basic as wi-fi, especially when promoting and selling apps that allow wi-fi would have been a no-brainer.

Anyway I have decided to stick with it, and try to find other ways to do what I need. It has so much to offer in sound quality. I was looking at the Casio PX-5S before the MOXf, but after the main piano and some EP’s, the rest on the PX was pure GM’sville!! And the cost difference is peanuts between the MOX and PX5.

Yes the AUDIO/MIDI over USB will be very handy!

No need to pay $2k to Yamaha. There are already ton of wirelss midi devices there. IMHO it’s not considered as a distinguishing feature, you can also do this with arduino and it’ll cost you sth below $100.
