I wonder if there are any plans from Yamaha for a full editor/librarian for the MX series (the free VycroMX Editor is only a single performance editor, it does not have voice editing capabilities nor full library support). Also, I wonder if there are any plans for implementing VSTi support for the MX Series (as an external VSTi instrument) because I am not able to use my MX61 with Ableton Live (no sound from the Midi tracks, it needs a VSTi intrument to play the sounds). |

In Ableton Live, you can use the External Instrument factory plugin to avoid having separate MIDI and audio tracks. It sends MIDI out and returns audio in. FWIW, the VST editors for other Motifs all require VST3 which is not supported in Live yet. |

These plans were announced back in January when the MX was first shown at Winter NAMM. The whole VSTi routing scenario (where you are returning audio to the computer and monitoring through the DAW) can be established (now) in some of the more advanced DAW without a VST Editor. For example, if own the top of the line version of Cubase, you can setup your hardware synthesizers as EXTERNAL INSTRUMENTS… Using the XML (Voice List, Instrument Definition, LSO, or whatever your DAW uses) as the associated MIDI Device, you are able to address the external hardware as an “External Plug-in"… The Audio of which is routed through the VST INSTRUMENT folder’s virtual Audio Lane… allowing the MIDI tracks to trigger and return audio from the synth engine… that audio can be processed within the DAW, then rendered as real audio via EXPORT AUDIO MIXDOWN. However, if you only are using the entry level Cubase AI (or a DAW not capable of the External Instrument routing scenario), for example, you will be anxious to get a hold of the VST versions of the Editors, due this summer according to the announcements at the Winter NAMM show. Check your particular favorites DAW’s documentation for the ability to setup for external instrument routing… It is not as easy to setup as a VST Editor (because it evolves external routing), but well worth the effort, actually… Provided your computer can achieve decent latency values. The Editor will have some advantages over the static Voice list or typical script file, in this instance, because the editor will easily and elegantly update the status of your hardware. One of the things that makes AI “advanced integration”, is just this, with a proper VST Editor, you can leapfrog many levels of DAW sophistication and use the advanced routing of the Virtual Studio Technology Instrument/Effects. Thank you for asking… Stay tuned. |

Thanks for your immediate response. 1) Regarding Ableton Live, I finally managed to route midi out to MX61 and record it back to a separate audio track (probably I was doing something wrong in the first place) BUT I would like to have it as an external VST instrument (I mean using MX61 like any other VST software synth, e.g Sylenth1 or Dune and control all its sounds and parameters from the DAW). By the way, I did’t know about the external instrument plugin, which is usefull but still we don’t have the performances and sounds in Ableton Live, like the xml midi import of performances in Cubase AI 6. Is there any way to do that in Ableton? 2) So, Bad_Mister, if I understand it right, we will have news by this summer regarding a VST Editor/plugin for Cubase AI 6? Thanks. |

You’ll have to wait until the MX editor arrives to know for sure. If the MX editor requires VST3 support, then the short answer for Ableton Live is no. Ableton (and most DAWs) only support VST2. Exceptions are Cubase (of course, VST is a Steinberg protocol), FL Studio and Presonus Studio One. VST3 support in DAWs has been a sore point for many users. It’s unclear if VST3 will ever be as ubiquitous as VST2. |

I don’t know if the future plans of Yamaha to provide a full editor/librarian concern the recently announced John Melas MX tools. This set of tools opens completely new horizons for MX series, since it is indeed a full voice editor (down to the elements level) and a total librarian (without VST support yet)

There are plans by many third party companies to provide support for the Yamaha MX. These third party companies are in business and (rightfully so) see a very huge opportunity, given the price-point breakthrough and feature set offered by the MX. |
