I have a old Mo Rack for which I recently purchased the Vintage Keys Voice Library. After downloading & reading all instructions, manuals and installation guides, I have a few problems.
Sooo… Thinking OS X was the problem, I loaded up my brother-in-law’s old Dell Inspiron 8500, with 512M and running Windows XP. After updating the Dell-nosaur for a day & 1/2, I downloaded the Windows versions, and successfully loaded the driver, Voice Editor, MultiPart and SM. I now see how Voice & MultiP are supposed to look on the Mac installation! In went the Vintage Keys zip file, it exploded correctly, and SM displayed my Vintage Voices. Oh boy, the Frankenstein patch is almost here! But after selecting and then transmitting bulk voices (I forget the correct terms, but followed the instructions), my Mo had the same voices as before. No combination of Utility setting changes on the Mo (including MIDI -> USB - read that here in the Forum) or software coddling could get the Mo to pull in those Vintage Voices. I tried one voice at a time, all at once, - I’m flummoxed. Am I missing a setting on the Mo that allows it to load those voices? FYI, I’m using an old Oxygen 25 as a key controller. It plays the original sounds just fine. I have a newer Axiom 61 that plays them also. There was a previous thread about a similar situation, but it went unanswered, which prompted my writing today. I’ve been working on this all week, have read more than I cared to, and have thought of everything I can. Any help from you Yamaha gurus would be greatly appreciated. Don’t care if it’s Windows or OS X, I just want my Vintage Keys IN the Mo Rack! Thanks in advance. |

BTW, the Studio Manager (SM) is giving me the exact same issue with my wife’s MacBook Pro, running OS X 10.6.8 with 16G of memory and a 2.7 Ghz Intel Core i7 processor. Tried it this AM. It’s not my MacBook. Additional info: I cannot assign MIDI channels in Voice Editor using the Win XP PC, the drop down menu gives no option, USB’d to the Mo Rack or not. I run the Yamaha driver in Control Panel, send “note on/off”, and the Mo Rack lights blink. So I believe the Mo Rack “sees” the PC, and vice versa. Again, thanks for your comments, as long as they’re nice. |

Thanks, Stone. From previous correspondence I knew you weren’t the guy to ask about the computer stuff, no offense. Thought I’d throw it up that frozen flagpole and see if anyone can - well, metaphors aside, help me figure it out. |

Well, I used an old Dell Inspiron 1500 with 1G RAM, running Windows Vista. After about 2 hours of tweaking, the old Mo Rack finally sucked up the Vintage Voices. As a technician, I should have kept more careful track of my procedures; but honestly, I was getting so frustrated, I just started stabbing at buttons. When it finally did work, it was more relief than wonderment. I heard my Frankenstein voice, saved, turned the Mo Rack off and back on to make sure it stuck - then went to bed. The trick seemed to be running MIDI Setup twice. Once initially, when selecting Voice and MultiPart to place in the workspace (clicking the middle tab MIDI settings), and then again under Voice - Setup. You have to click the drop down arrow to see that “not available” is not the only choice. The Frankenstein voice is nice. I’m going to work on assigning knobs to make the filter sweep dart semi-randomly back up, like the recording. The Journey patch is dead on, as is the ELP Karn Evel #9 voice. Many great sounds, and kudos to the voice developers. The OS X setups do not seem to work for me. No matter what, I cannot place Voice or MultiPart into the Workspace. Downloading drivers, old OS X versions, - nothing. I would advise OS X users to dig up an old Windows laptop from somewhere with at least 1G RAM, and use it. I really can’t imagine using the Mo Rack for tougher computer based stuff. I’ve 15 years in IT, have set up casino slot systems, production lines, and lots of small networks with PC tech; comparatively, this is some klugey stuff. I’m more interested in creating music and useful sounds quickly than solving driver/download problems. DD issues are what we pay SW engineers to make easier. I’m realizing Yamaha owners are used to, and accept, these issues. Kinda like Corvette or Cadillac owners, that have issues but love their babies. (’90 Vette convertible, all options.) But excellent products push beyond the norm, and make the process enjoyable, instead of such a chore. Just stating an opinion, not looking for a debate. Thanks, Stone, for watching over me during the process. Nice to know there’s one other person on the Forum. Your recommendation, although arduous, will sound great! Mark, aka KCnoTek |

Hi kcnotek and stoneb3, it may be a little late for my reply but when using OSX and trying to install the editors in the studio manager you ought to know the following:
You have to open Studio Manager in Rosetta (apparently the Motif-Rack Editors were created for the Power PC, and not Universal Binary)
Go to your APPLICATIONS folder
This will not work in the latest OSX (no Rosetta anymore...) Hope this was helpful, Vaucluse84 |
