What kind of media card do you have?
Only SMC or SMC-adapters fit in the ES.

I must have the SMC cause it fits in the motif, it just I dont have a slot on my computer to put the actual update file on it..
i figured you could do the update via the usb port on the motif as i have a smart card reader which can host a smaller smart card I stored the file on...if that makes any sense

You must use a Smart Media card...that is a type of card, other flash cards include Compact Flash, SD, xD…

You must use the Smart Media slot, you cannot update via the USB port.

Here is a solution to your problems:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2T4hEXxfdE

http://www.amazon.com/Memory-Smartmedia-Reader-Writer-Adapter/dp/B000L12F10

I have it and use in on the S90 and ES8

The xD card should be 128Mb and can be read/written on any computer.

Can that be done on the ES - since it has a format option? Or are you saying it has to be done elsewhere?
