I’ve been out of the live scene for over a decade.  Doing mostly studio work over the years, I have always run everything in stereo.  Starting to work on putting something together to gig live.  Finding out that most of the front-end systems are running in mono.

Will this effect the overall sound quality of the sounds on the XF?  Is it best to just use 1 mono output on the keyboard or still use both L/R outputs but pan each mixer channel to one side?

I don’t really have any sounds that I use specifically for stereo effects but I’m sure the effects on the sounds themselves are stereo.

I’m running everything through a local mixer and planning on giving the front-end a balanced feed from my main outs.  I’m hoping I can still keep everything panned hard l/r and just give them the l/r out from the mixer and let them patch them in mono for me.

Just looking doing a little research before hitting that first gig.

Thanks

If the FOH is mono, whether you send a mono feed or it’s created at the board from a stereo feed won’t matter. Yes, many of the effects sound weaker in mono but that’s the nature of the beast.

BTW when I play live I always go mono.

When live then I would think you’re using only the L/Mono output from the Motif? Do you normally self monitor or take a feed from the house?

I have a situation where I feed the house left and right, which they put on separate channels (panned full left and right respectively) on their board, but the monitor mix I get back sounds awful. FOH is fine. I believe their board is summing me to mono on the monitor feed as it’s a single wire coming back.

Maybe I’ll try going mono there and see what happens. Any pointers with sound selection? I use my Rack XS for piano and EP/FM almost exclusively.

Thanks!

Bob
