I stumbled on a couple of Performance presets in the Motif XS that are great for playing popular songs. Prog Rock is nearly perfect for ‘Time’ by Pink Floyd, and the Dark Continent combi is almost exactly the song Africa by Toto. Just wondering what other Performances are out there at least in the preset banks that are that close to the original songs??

I stumbled on the Pink Floyd performance only recently, but now I am thinking that there are probably a lot of others, so I’ll go through them and see what I find. If you like popular/famous synth sounds, definitely get the 80s Part 1 & 2 sound sets in Motif shop, along with Vintage Keys. The team that does the programming on these are brilliant, especially David Polich.

The only Performance that I could find was: 80s Young Guns is Van Halen - Jump which is USER 2 H04. Where are the others? Maybe I went too fast.

1. Dark Continent (Africa by Toto) is User 1 A13
2. Prog Rocker (Time by Pink Floyd) is User 2 B07
3. 80’s Young Gun is User 2 H04, although for Jump I personally like Synth Power in User 1 C01 and actually mute everything except for the big synth sound, I think Part 2
4. American Beauty is likely modelled after American Beauty the movie, User 1, H15
5. 16Beat Rock is a great program for Don Henley’s Sunset Grill. It’s User 3, B01
6. Don’t know where Big Watches or Minor Mood are. Couldn’t find them myself either.

Ah Bad_Mister stop the teasing. Give us a few at least. I have an XS and do not have the Minor Mood or Big Watches. Wish I had the Cold Play performance.

I’m starting to get this Newbury Street 1980, must be Boston, the Cars or J Geils or something but I can’t quite figure it out.

Did anyone really think these voices and performances were created at random?

Yes, as you mentioned, there’s a difference between the XS and the XF. When new or after a factory reset, the USER1 bank of an XF has voices that are based on new waveforms that aren’t in the XS.

12 O’Clock High matches R.E.M. - “Losing my religion”

Closing time matches Lou Reed’s “Perfect day”, Eros Ramazzotti’s “Se bastasse una canzone”, Kylie Minogue & Nick Cave’s “Wild rose”

Both performances are in Rock section.

It would be kinda nice to have a list of all of them, or at least, a lot of them. I feel a little dull because until I read this thread when first posted, I really hadn’t connected the performances to any songs in particular. I just used them as needed, choosing one that had a beat that I was looking for.

It would be convenient to know the ones that match certain songs.

And that was the original discussion - does knowing what song a PERFORMANCE is loosely based-on help or inhibit someone from using the data creatively. We think once you know “Dark Continent” is based on Toto’s Africa, you cannot hear anything else when you play it - and until it is suggested to you, you might have used it to write an entirely original song of your own (oblivious to the Toto song). Had someone told you in advance it is loosely based-on “Africa” you might not have used that Performance at all… thinking you can’t play anything else with it (but au contraire, mon frere)

So the list of source material is not published and we think that this is the right thing to do, since the purpose of the data is for you to combine in unique ways to make YOUR OWN SONG creations. If you hear the source song, okay, you hear the source song, if you don’t, you might just write your own HIT song inspired by the PERFORMANCE - it is not designed so you can play the source song, after all, but so that you can use the combination of arps in a unique fashion to create YOUR OWN SONG.

If you want an exact STYLE to match an exact song you would have purchased a PSR-S-series or a Tyros keyboard. The focus in the Music Production Synths is toward helping you create original compositions more than cover material (although it is fun).

How about:
“Free Fall” - Free Falling - T. Petty
“Jack Does it Again” - Do it Again - Steely Dan
“Urban Shuffle” - Isn’t She Lovely - S. Wonder

Come on…

And if you don’t hear it, don’t worry… write a different song with it!!!
