Unlike DRAM, flash memory chips have a limited lifespan. Further, different flash chips have a different number of write cycles before errors start to occur. Flash chips with 300,000 write cycles are common, and currently the best flash chips are rated at 1,000,000 write cycles per block (with 8,000 blocks per chip). Now, just because a flash chip has a given write cycle rating, it doesn’t mean that the chip will self-destruct as soon as that threshold is reached. It means that a flash chip with a 1 million Erase/Write endurance threshold limit will have only 0.02 percent of the sample population turn into a bad block when the write threshold is reached for that block.

Motif XS still rocks, it’s timeless.

So the question should be: how many cycles are needed to put
the samples you want into place.

And: if I don’t change a thing thereafter, do I not effect any
write cycles any more?

Note: the SMC card had a ‘lifetime’ of 6000 write cycles.
And after 7 years it still works for me.

Last long play CD I’ve been working on and won Grammy took me 201000 cycles…

But hey, I play only delirium jazz-rock fusion - trance and rap will take even more cycles since only thing they do is looping…

Time to get over it delirium.

Flash RAM is an improvement over conventional RAM anyway you look at it.

simple math, assuming you rewrite your flash memory every hour of every day, hence: (300000/12)/365 = 68 years

You actually counted the times you cycled during a production?  And you came up with 200,000+?  And you have a Grammy?  I’d like a link to the last, if possible and proof that you aren’t certifiably insane if you answer “yes” to the first (which may then nullify the need to produce a link for the third).

I personally don’t plan on cycling my Motif over a million times or so in the next couple of years.  Maybe I’m the weird one though.
