Hello! I look forward using the XF with an additional external keyboard controller connected to it. The idea is to have an Axiom or Novation SL MKII connected to the XF playing additional XF sounds on MIDI channels that are not addressed by the XF internal keyboard. With proper programming and by routing the sounds played from the external keyboard to the assignable outputs, this would simulate perfectly a traditional setup with 2 keyboards. Can a USB keyboard controller be connected to the XF, being seen by the XF as a USBMIDI input and at the same time the keyboard being powered by XF’s USB? This would be of course the simplest setup, with the Novation connected to the XF with a single USB cable! Thanks, Emanuele |

No. You cannot connect an external keyboard directly to the Motif via USB. The USB “TO HOST” jack connects to a computer and communication is two-way via the Yamaha USB-MIDI driver. You will need to connect your external keyboard to your computer and route it to the Motif XF via the USB-MIDI driver - connected to the same computer. |

Thanks for the info. So, in case I would not use a computer I would use MIDI, right? Emanuele |

Yes. MIDI - with MIDI you can connect directly to the Motif without a computer. |

Yes, this can be achieved in Multi-timbral mode (MIX mode). You can copy your Performance settings to a Mix using a MIX Job command [F3] Copy (p.237 of the Motif XS Owner’s Manual). No, it is not possible. You have to use MIDI connections. |
