Just got a motif xs8

Welcome to the forums.

There are many ways to connect your Motif XS8 to your MacBook Pro. These include USB-MIDI, Firewire or via Ethernet. Just how you do it will depend on what you want to do.

USB-MIDI for MIDI communication (record/playback MIDI data to external sequencer, set and use the Editor software)
Firewire for MIDI and AUDIO communication (record/playback MIDI and AUDIO to external sequencer, use the Editor software)
Ethernet on a Mac will allow you to access a USB drive connected to the Motif XS from your computer. You can move data from your computer to a USB drive that is connected to the Motif XS8’s TO DEVICE port.

You only mention “how to use the apeggio in real time play as well as when I want to record songs” - you don’t need to connect your Motif XS8 to your computer at all to do either one of those things. You can play arpeggios in real time and record them to the Motif XS’s own sequencer.

Nor do you need to connect it to a computer in order to load in new VOICES - this can be done directly from a USB drive plugged into the TO DEVICE port on the back panel.

Your Motif XS8 probably came with Cubase AI (depending on where in the world you are) which is DAW software if you prefer to record using your computer. But we recommend you become familiar with what is available on-board the Motif XS8 first.
