Hi - I’ve got a Performance where my keyboard is split in three, with a different voice in each split zone. (Motif Classic here, for some reason I can’t make that stick in my user profile).

I made that performance a Master, and set the Zone Switch to on. I then hit the edit button, and then navigate to the window which has the various zone edit functions available (the one with the words at the bottom: TRANS, NOTE, TXSW, PRESET, KN/CS).

When I try to edit at this point, I get pretty confused, it seems to me that the Motif is not allowing me to make changes to the zones individually, just globally.

For example when I hit preset, highlight zone 1 and turn the volume to zero in zone 1 (the other two remain at 100), then store/enter/exit - when I play my keyboard, no sound comes out of ANY section of my keyboard.

I’m sure I’m missing a basic concept here, but I think the manual has beaten me on this one (again :-) ).

Can someone help me understand this a little better please? My understanding at this point is that I can put the same Performance into different Masters, edit the Masters, and have different variations on that Performance played when I play each different Master.

Okay, let’s get your terminology straightened out so that you can better understand what’s happening (or not happening) and why. What is true about Master mode is the following:

When you associate a program (Voice, Performance, or Song/Pattern Mising) the rules of that mode will apply.

Translation: When you create a VOICE and associate it with a MASTER - the rule that applies is that you can only play one VOICE at a time while in VOICE mode. That the Voice is on the Basic MIDI receive channel of the Motif - the Motif keyboard transmits on only one MIDI channel while in VOICE mode. Therefore you can only have one ZONE of the MASTER addressing internal programs. ONLY ZONE 1 for example will address the internal Voice… while ZONES 2, 3 and 4 can be used for external devices.

When you create a PERFORMANCE (as you have) and you associate it with a MASTER - the rule that applies is that you can only one PERFORMANCE at a time while in PERFORMANCE mode… That the PERFORMANCE has its PARTs on the same Basic MIDI Receive channel. Therefore you can only have one ZONE of the MASTER addressing the interal Performance… while ZONES 2, 3 and 4 can be used for extenal devices.

The term “ZONE” is misused here in Yamaha-Motif-Speak. You have split the keyboard into three Note Limit regions… the term ZONE is only used in reference to MASTER mode, by the Motif.

Here is how to accomplish what you want and why:

You need to take the following steps with your PERFORMANCE: Transfer it to a SONG or PATTERN MIXING setup. Why? because according to rules of the modes, when you create a MIXING program each PART is placed on a separate MIDI Channel… when you are in SONG or PATTERN mode the Motif can transmit to multiple PARTS simultaneously… yes only one at time from the keyboard - but on up to 16 simultaneously by the sequencer… The point is you can have sounds on multiple MIDI channel.

MASTER MODE allows you to transmit on upto 4 MIDI channels simultaneously via the ZONE structure… each ZONE to be applied to a separate MIDI channel.

So by transferring your PERFORMANCE to three Parts of a MIXING setup, when you associate it with the MASTER mode, you can have one Zone to address each PART.
It does not work in VOICE mode
It does not work in PERFORMANCE mode
It works in a SONG (or PATTERN) MIXING mode because they are the only modes where you can have multiples sounds on different MIDI Channels… Make sense?

Go to a Blank SONG (or PATTERN)
Press [MIXING]
Press [JOB]
Press [F5] PF COPY (Performance Copy)

Check the attributes you want to copy…
Press [ENTER] to execute

What this does is copy the PARTs to individual PARTS of the MIXING setup - and places them all on MIDI channel 1 (the Basic receive channel)

If you now want to address these from separate ZONES of a MASTER… change the MIDI channels as follows:
Press [MIXING]
Press [EDIT]
Press Track Select [1] to view PART parameters
Press [F1] VOICE
Press [SF2] MODE
Set PART 1 to MIDI Channel 1
PART 2 to MIDI Channel 2
PART 3 to MIDI Channel 3

Name and store the SONG and MIXING setups…

Go to MASTER
assiciate the MASTER with the SONG you just created.
Turn the ZONE SWITCH = ON

Now you can address the individual PARTs of the MIXING setup from individual ZONES of a MASTER…
Set ZONE 1 to transmit on MIDI Channel 1 to the Interal Tone Generator
Set ZONE 2 to transmit on MIDI channel 2, and so on.

Hi Bad Mister - I’m getting ready to program for a gig next weekend. I know the songs, but not the play order.

If I make a bunch of Masters, what is the easiest way to rearrange their order later? I thought of copy to a blank location, then rearrange, but I was wondering if there were a way to sort of drag them to the right position, like windows folders?

Hi - I’m busy doing this stuff today, I thought instead of posting questions all over the place on the forum, I’d keep them here.

I notice in the Song > Mixing display, the virtual (displayed) fader on Channel 1 is fixed, i.e., it is not able to be moved up and down by moving the 1st of the four physical faders at the top of the Motif. In this four Part song, Channel 2, 3, and 4’s virtual/displayed faders can be moved by moving their physical counterparts at the top of the Motif, but not for virtual/displayed Channel 1.

If anyone can let me know why not, I’m sure it will be another “learning/teaching” moment - thanks!
