I have just upgraded my DX7II to an MO6. First inpressions are awsome, and I am slowly working my way through the manual. For a bit of light relief (yes I need a life!) I am exploring Cubase.

I want to play a Cubase track through the MO, but there is no option to set the MO as an output device for a track.

Can anyone please give me some pointers, I am assuming I haven’t done something I should have, or have done something wrong.

My setup:
Windows Vista 23 bit SP1
Quad core Intel 2.8Ghz Pentium
4Gb 1333Mhz DDR3
MO6 connected using USB
Yamaha USB-MIDI Driver (WDM) 3.0.1.1
Cubase AI4 4.5.2
Studio manager 2.3.0
Voice editor 2.2.0
Multi part editor 2.2.0

What I can do:
Can transmit voice data library from the voice editor to the MO.
Can sound individual keys on the MO through the voice editor screen ‘keyboard’ using the mouse.
Can record tracks from the MO in Cubase.

When I play the MO, the notes sound through Cubase as well as the keyboard amp, though there is several Ms. between the keypress and the sound.

More info:
I have set ‘Utility’ ‘MIDI IN/OUT’ to USB on the MO.
In Cubase, “Devices|Device setup” shows no Remote devices.

Being a noob, I realise that maybe there is more useful information I can give to anyone kind enough to reply. No problem, please ask. Also, it’s difficult for me to check for replies during the day (I am in Australia) so ‘conversations’ may be slow, but that’s fine, I have heaps to be going on with on the MO.

This question has been covered a number of times, so a quick Search ("MO script") will turn up several threads. Click here for one of the more recent ones; I think it will answer your question. In addition if you wish to stick to using just a simple script, you can ‘easily’ create your own...although creating it is time consuming and a bit tedious. HTH.............frank

I got too enthusiastic, it’s hard not to with a keyboard like this.

Sorry, but I have spent HOURS AND HOURS trying to get a Cubase track to play though my MO. I even registered my copy of Cubase in case it needed to be registered to get this to work. That’s why i posted my version data at the start of this thread.

All the ‘instructions’ I have read don’t seem to match my software, for example there references to Cubase menu and dialog options that just don’t exist.

Studio connections was the same.

So I have given up, I am resigned to the fact that unless i manage to work out how to code up a script for the MO, I cannot play tracks through mu keyboard.

Needless to say I am a little peeved.

Some background…
I may be a MO noob, but I have spent the last 40 years working on computer software in various parts of the world, mostly on operating systems and low level software, which leads me to believe i know a reasonable amount about computer hardware and software. So, for once, I am convinced it’s nothing I have/havent done that’s stopped this from working. Also, I am grossly annoyed that (as usual) the available help isn’t, and the various tutorials are either incorrect or out of date.

Well, first let’s step back and take a big breath! :) I can indeed sense your frustration, but I can also assure you that the products you have will produce a solid performance provided they are installed on a solid system and are set up correctly. Having said that, I’m sure your many years of experience with computers etc. are helping add to your frustration since your head is telling you that it must be the equipment and documentation. But I think you are also aware that the majority of folks are using the software and hardware successfully, so you may also be thinking “why can’t I?” Anyway, let’s see what we can do to get you on track.
I’m going to leave comments on the MO itself to the people who actually work for Yamaha...they prefer that, but perhaps I can offer some help and advice with the rest. In the beginning it seemed your main concern was whether there was a script etc., but it appears now it goes far beyond that. Otherwise why would anyone even want to use the software or develop it?

Perhaps one idea might be to start by simplifying your approach. You do realize you do not even need Studio Manager or scripts to “play tracks through mu keyboard”?? You can simply assign each Cubase MIDI track to an individual MIDI channel (e.g. bass on ch. 1. piano on ch. 2, pad on ch. 3 etc.) then set up the MO for 16-track ‘multi--timbral’ operation (e.g.‘Pattern’ mode). Have you tried that? Have you by any chance read through all the documentation {url=http://motifator.com/index.php/support/mo_articles/] (click here) [/url] provided by Yamaha for the MO that tells you how to do that? Have you also learned about “List Editor” in Cubase where you can also insert CC and Program Change data, that can then switch your MO’s individual voices whenever you wish? All of this can be done by simply using a USB cable and the Yamaha USB MIDI driver...provided the ports in Cubase are set up correctly and your MO is set to receive and send MIDI correctly. Are you having problems in those areas?

Cubase AI, which you received for free, is not meant to supply you with numerous additional features that the commercial versions have.....that’s also why it’s free....so you will indeed see features missing when a document refers to Cubase 4 or 5. AI is simply a lite starter version meant to stimulate one’s interest in buying the more advanced versions, so if you do find that you want some of the missing features, you need to consider upgrading.

Creating a script, if one wishes to do that, can be done either in the full versions of Cubase or simply in any text editor, using an existing script as a guideline. When it comes to using Studio Manager...again this is something available in addition to Cubase, not everyone needs it or even uses it, but if you feel you would like to incorporate it into your system, then perhaps post some specific questions here about it, and provide folks with details concerning your port settings and your hardware settings etc., and folks like Yamaha’s Bad Mister can advise where things may be going wrong for you.

One might assume that you may be trying to do too much in the beginning with too much, rather than starting out simply and working your way up. I don’t know if that is correct, but if it is then it may also be useful to back up a little and take it one step at a time rather than try and do everything at once. Certainly might be a little less frustrating! :) Anyone, let us know specifically where things aren’t working for you, and what settings you are attempting to use, and we’ll try and help.
