Hello,

I want to record a song i have in my xs sequenser to sonar 8
by usb-midi that is properly connected.
How to set all the settings in sonar and on my xs?
the problem I have is: I want the clocks to be sync’ed ...
do I use midi or mtc?

on my xs in utility/control/midi/sync, internal? midi? mtc?
clock out =on i guess…
The XS should be in control of the tempo ?
Let’s assume it should…
then I set in Sonar,
Options/Project Settings/clock/source, midi? mtc?

I tried both mtc and midi settings in sonar and on my xs,
but Sonar stops to listen for a signal ‘waiting for sync’ when pressed record, and it doesnt respond when i press play on my XS… i tried various settings around this but couldn’t get it to work…

also i tried to transmit from sonar a midi and mtc signal to my XS, on XS I set clock out to off and triend bot MIDI and MTC.
But again sonar halts ‘waiting for MIDI sync...’

Motiforum users,
Have you got a clue for me how this is done?

That would be great. Thanks

Oh wait, I got a setting that works now…
When i set clocksource to ‘audio’ in Sonar,
it set everything for Sonar to transmit a clock, and my XS responds...!
I can record all the tracks and I think I am happy now.

But it doesn’t make sense to me to put it on ‘audio’,.. why?? I’m only doing midi so far…

I am not an expert on Sonar, but it has been my experience with any of the most popular DAW software packages that they default to not sending MIDI clock - and there is usually an option for you to turn it ON.

Look under OPTIONS and either “CLOCK” or “SYNC” or some related word. There you usually will find a box that lets to Transmit MIDI clock out… and you may need to assign it to a specific MIDI PORT (in some cases).

This is quite different from synthesizer workstations which normally send MIDI clock by default. When working with DAW softwre you usually have to make it the MASTER clock so you’d think they would have it ON… But I guess with all the graphics and pretty stuff on the screen, they feel why tax the CPU any more than you have to (besides if you really need it, you’ll turn it ON).

A picture is worth a thousand words.  Check out my post in the ARCHIVES…

(Note, the ARCHIVES no longer display pictures automatically, but there’s a LINK in my post to a screenshot pointing at exactly the parameter you need to set.

:)
Thank you for your replies!
what now seems to work for me:

set motif to:
MIDI sync: MIDI
Clock out: off
Seq control: in

and in Sonar set:
project options: sync: send MIDI sync: [V] transmit MIDI SDtart/Continue/Stop/Clock
(also i turned on transmit SPP)
and
Clock: source: [V] Audio

i can record the tracks from the motif seq to sonar, simply by setting up all the tracks (16 at most) and pressing record (in seq mode)!

it seems a bit difficult to communicate all this but it works!
