You will not believe it, but a friend of me using Cubase 4.5.2 asked me to help him out:

Equipment in use: MOTIFXS6 with mLAN16E2, Windows Quadcore PC with Vista 64-bit and Cubase 4.5.2. All the new drivers like the for the YSFW and the new steinberg extension are installed.

Everything works great with the exception of one important issue:

He cannot record a midi track: the MIDI IN and OUT are set to MOTIFXS6, the XS editor works OK, communication with the XS works OK, but when he arms the midi track with the red button and speaker symbol on, and hit the red button in the transport window it does not start recording. Thats what he told me.

What did he set wrong in Cubase, I dont know.

When I do the same in mine PC with Cubase everything works normal. So when is a midi track not starting recording after hitting the red button after arming that midi track?

I do not know and I really want to help that guy.

As I’m sure you know the devil’s in the details. But just from this Cubase 4.5.2 and Vista 64-bit… so we are to assume that he downloaded the Preview version Cubase for Vista 64?

Tell him he should contact his regional Steinberg support with the exact versions of what he has loaded… Cubase 5 is native to run on 64-bit. Not being an early adopter of Vista 64 myself, I have no experience with it running Cubase 4.5.2 But if he visits http://www.steinberg.net he can find out about Vista 64 support for 4.5.2

Bad Mister,

Preview version of Cubase 4.5.2 for Vista 64-bit, I have to ask him that. I do not think he installed that version. Still he told me that the problem is solved.

He told me that he had selected a wrong asio driver instead of the FW asio driver in Cubase. Now I think about that, is that possible? Does that prevent recording midi tracks? I wonder?

Jan, just FYI, there never was a fully supported 64 bit version of Cubase 4.X.X...only a Beta version that had some problems. The first fully supportted 64 bit version of Cubase is Cubase 5. If he wasn’t using the 64 bit version as you suggest then it appears he would be using the 32 bit version on a 64 bit o/s. Why?

Re. the ASIO driver, unless his audio interface also has MIDI ports that he is using, the audio device would not normallly affect the “recording” of “MIDI”. When trouble shooting MIDI, one need to start at the beginning of the MIDI chain and work forward one step at a time. For example, is the synth actually sending MIDI, then is the MIDI getting to the MIDI interface, then in Cubase are the MIDI ports set up correctly and are they working? Then, is there MIDI activity on the MIDI activity meters on the Transport bar? Is the MIDI track then set to receive on the proper port and channel? See what I’m suggesting? Take it one step at a time and don’t try and look at everything at once. It’s an approach that always seems to work.
Anyway, if he did get it working, I suggest he will still want to consider which version of Cubase he’s using with what o/s............frank

Thanks for the extra info. I have checked it out myself on steinberg.net and foundout that the 32-bit version of Cubase 4.5.2 will work on a PC with Windows Vista 64-bit without any problems with the limitation addressing of 4Gbyte RAM, you only need the 64-bit drivers ofcourse. It also mentioned that you can have both versions on your Vista 64-bit systems, because they keep there on folders and preference settings.

So if I do understand steinberg well, than it will be no problem using Cubase 4.5.2, 32-bit Vista.
