First, after installing all the new drivers and extensions for my setup is:

PC with WINDOWS Vista 32 bit, Cubase 5.0, MOTIF XS8, Yamaha N12 mixer via Fire wire, TYROS3 via USB and several Yamaha soundmodules via MIDI.

Installed, Steinberg extension for DAW V1.5.0
Installed, YSFW driver, V1.1.0
XS firmware updater V1.07
N12 updater V1.04
Studio Manager V2.3.0 and XS editor V1.1.1.

XS changed setup from mLAN into FW
XS setup changed from stand alone in to with PC

Cubase ASIO changed in FW ASIO

I start with power ON XS and N12 first before I start Cubase 5.0

After selecting New Project, I choose for N12 multi channel template and add 4 additional midi tracks to it.

Now the question starts: I open midi device manager and added:

1) MOTIFXS8 to MOTIFXS Main
2) TYROS3 using USB digital working station 2
3) CS88 Roland sound module to MOTIFXS Main
4) Yamaha TG500 to MOTIFXS Main

Back to the Cubase project screen: the midi tracks I set resp.:

midi track no. 1 MOTIFXS Main IN and CS88 OUT
midi track no. 2 MOTIFXS Main IN and TG500 OUT
midi track no. 3 MOTIFXS Main IN and TYROS3 digital OUT
midi track no. 4 MOTIFXS Main IN and MOTIXXS Main OUT

midi track 1,2 and 3 are working perfectly and I hear the sound of each track after I set the speaker symbol ON of the midi track. However the MOTIFXS IN to MOTIFXS does not give any sound while the XS is in the “ with PC” mode, when I changed that into “ stand alone” or “with PC direct monitor” I get sound form the XS but a little distorded. Maybe “doubling” issue here.

The problem occures only in MIDI.

When I use the audio tracks of each instrument/module everything works perfectly. I hear all the modules and I can record all the audio to the individual audio tracks.

What I want to do is: playing and recording all my music on the midi tracks, including the XS synthesizer and when I am finished, converting those midi tracks to the audio tracks and build up my musical project. While I am playing/recording the individual midi tracks I want to hear them as well, incl. a clear sound of my XS synth. Now I hear clear sound of all my modules and the TYROS3 and a distorded sound from my XS.

Sorry for this very long post, but I want to inform as complete as possible.

I hope Bad Mister or any other expert have some suggestions for me to look at.

Thanks

Jan

I’d love to help you but I have my own questions…

What does: “1) MOTIFXS8 to MOTIFXS Main” mean? Is that some kind of script file that you are using?

What does this mean? I’m not familiar with any of this in the MIDI DEVICE MANAGER… Is what you are explaining how you have the DEVICE MANAGER addressing script files? Sorry, I just never use the MIDI Device Manager much…

I am also going to assume you are recording MIDI to Cubase in this instance. The mLAN MONITOR parameter has to do main when you are routing audio out via mLAN. It is not clear from your post exactly what the problem is
... you say:

“...playing and recording all my music on the midi tracks, including the XS synthesizer and when I am finished, converting those midi tracks to the audio tracks and build up my musical project. While I am playing/recording the individual midi tracks I want to hear them as well, incl. a clear sound of my XS synth. Now I hear clear sound of all my modules and the TYROS3 and a distorded sound from my XS.”

Perhaps it would help me understand if you told me how you have your speakers connected, (to the n12 or to the Motif XS), and how you listening to the Motif XS when you working with MIDI.

Distorted and doubling are two different things. Distorted sound is caused by something clipping, an input (usually). Doubling is simply listening to the signal direct and through your DAW, simultaneously.

It would help me to know how you are routing audio out of the Motif XS. Since all the other things (TG500, Tyros, CS88) are working fine. I assume these are connected to the n12 via 1/4” cables. Correct? If so what is different about how you have the Motif XS8 connected?

How is the Motif XS connected to the n12 for audio? I think this is where the answer will be found for you.

Let us know.

Bad Mister,

Sorry, with midi device manager, I ment device manager onwhich the TG500, CS88 and TYROS3 are on ofwhich I use the script files. I realise now that the MOTIFXS does not belong there, because I have the XS editor. Stupid me.

The XS8 audio is connected via 1/4” to the N12 channels 9/10 and ofcourse also via fire wire cable to the N12 fire wire connector. I suppose the analog L/R out of the XS is something I do not need, because I have fire wire connection for the audio. But, how do I use my XS8 to make first a midi track, before I record it as audio. In midi it is easier to correct errors than in an audio file.

Bad Mister,

I forgot to mention

My Monitor speakers are connected to the N12, but most of the time I listen via my headphones plugged into the N12. When I work with midi tracks I listen with my headphones plugged into the N12.

I work most of the time first with midi tracks, track by track, but also with imported audio tracks with the intention to add extra tracks to it, which I first do in midi and than convert them to audio.

Bad Mister,

Problem is solved. Your questions made me think again and I removed the MOTIFXS from the midi device manager and set de midi track van de XS as: MOTIFXS8 main IN and MOTIFXS8 main OUT.

Now I can record XS as midi and hear it perfectly on my headphone plugged into the N12.

One thing, I wonder how adding the MOTIFXS8 in the midi device manager has any effect on the way you set the MIDI IN and OUT of the MOTIFXS8 midi track and effects the sound quality as well.
