When I bought my Motif 8 in 2002, I also bought a SCSI device (a Yamaha CDRW 2200 SX to be exact). I had bought it to load Akai samples to the keyboard. Unfortunately some of them would not load (many of the Big Fish Celtic Instruments, for example) and so I gave up on the device. But now that I am returning to my Motif education, I have learned (I think) that this device should be able to STORE Waveforms, Patterns and such. But, in trying, I was unable to save from the keyboard to a disk or even to format a rewritable disk for memory storage. I talked to one person at Yamaha and he said that I needed to format a CD to FAT32 first using a computer. I have tried this using “Run” “Format” in Windows and I have tried DOS commands. Then I looked online and am now convinced that ordinary CDRW disks cannot be formatted to File Allocation Transfer format using a computer. I must be missing something here.

I hear that some keyboards are using USB flash drives to store waveforms/patterns/songs. But this feature has developed since I bought my Motif. Is there some way to work things so that I could save to a USB flash drive from a Motif 8?

Things have moved on a bit.

I used to have a scsi drive for my emu 6400 model, or something like that.

You create sample libraries etc.

Those were quite small compared to sample libraries today.

The usb on the mo6/8 is just for configuration data, no sound files because the mo6/8 can’t load them, fixed sound set.

I don’t know that much about the original motif but there is a forum here with users who might be able to help, try posting there.

The old Motif Classic 8 can’t store data to a newer USB flash drive unfortunately. The USB port only transfers MIDI and control data to a computer. I haven’t used a CD drive with my “Classic” (worked well with a SCSI Zip drive though). If you search the archives in the Motif Classic section of the forum you’ll probably find some info on using one for storing and loading .wav files. You may have to expand the sample RAM in the keyboard if you haven’t already done that.
