There is a small metal plate on the bottom of the Motif which provides access to the memory slots.  The manual also provides detail. RTFM.

Which expansion pack? Some may not have Performances included.  If the voice library/expansion you purchase does, it typically comes with load instructions for loading properly.

It could be possible that you’re loading voices individually and not an .ALL file.  In which case, you wouldn’t be loading the Performance data. Loading an ALL file should make them available.

I picked up some RAM from eBay(no troubles)
It was new and its been okay.

Just run a search on eBay for Motif XS ram and you’ll find plenty of sources. PM me if you want the name of the company that I purchased from(they are reputable).

You’ll save money too. :)

Look, if you are asking for a name, I guess that Samsung (2 X 512) works pretty well. There are two Samsung in my XS and they do the job.

About instalation, this video with this kid is a nice tutorial:

What about ECC vs. Non-Ecc memory and Parity vs. Non-parity?
Is it important or irrelevant for the use with Motif XS?
Motif’s manual also mentions that memory must conform withg JEDEC, but I don’t see that any seller indicates this, so this can be ignored?

ECC (=double parity) and Parity memory is only supported in large computers.

So, does it mean that:
1) it doesn’t matter ECC or non-ECC, or
2) I have to buy non-ECC only :-)?

As I said.
And please buy the memory as indicated in the manual.
Or buy it from KEYFAX (see STORE above).

Thanks, Sciuriware, for you input, though, sorry, I still didn’t get does Motif accept both (ECC and non-ECC) or only one (non-ECC). And, unfortunately, Manual doesn’t say anything about this too (that’s why I was asking).

Compatible memory, indicated on http://www.yamahasynth.com/products/motifxs/compatibility.html, - based on my reserach on the Web - is available only from Japanese sites.

Keyfax Store prices are 50%-150% than many other stores offer which pushes Keyfax down on the list of potential choices.

Anyway, thanks again.

Mine look like Non ECC but I’m not 100% sure.

The best method is to buy from a source that guarantee’s compatibility. I payed something like 48 dollars for mine a few months ago. They work without a hitch, load massive samples in them all the time.

You’re right about pricing. I wonder if some resellers get caught with stock and they don’t get to adjust pricing accordingly. Looking around, most of the 1GB kits(2x512) are around 40 USD atm.

Don’t bother with ECC - you would only ever buy ECC DIMMS when specifically told to. Error Correctiing Code DIMMS (ECC) are used in servers and high-end workstations but if you do use them and the motherboard does not support them, it simply ignores the ECC routines. Ditto with Parity DIMMS (which are technically different but often confused with ECC) which often have a 9th chip (on an eight chip DIMM). Again the Parity chip will not cause a problem; you simply don’t need it and the XS would ignore it.

We have used a variety of DIMMS in a few Motifs and I am pretty certain that bog-standard PC 100 or PC 133 - 168 pin DIMMS (matched pair) are fine. These will have 2 notches unlike more modern DDR or DDR2 DIMMS which have 1.

Assuming it has enough RAM, you should be able to plunder a 3 or 4 year old PC and get what you need.

Regards,

B

PS I am reliably informed that the Motifator Store is the “main source of income” which helps make this site possible. Armed with this (to me) new fact, I think we should all try to buy from here and regard any extra few pennies over and above the ‘best’ price as a small amount to pay for such sterling support!

I say this assuming you can afford the extra pennies of course! :))_

Thank you, JohnBee and thank you, Boulez!

Finally I got clear and detail explanation. I suspected that these features are not important (but would not hurt also), but just played safe.

To Boulez:
> “a cynic knows the price of everything
> and the value of nothing.”
There is sort of similar Russian saying “The miser pays twice” :-). And I agree completely with your view, but would like to spend saved money on some extra sounds offered by Motifator as soon as I get and install additional 1GB of memory (the first one will most likely be “Digital Sound Factory Steinway Model L Grand Piano for Motif XS” from http://motifator.keyfax.com/mart/mainframe_V_DSF_SMLGP.htm).

Thanks again, guys!
Really appreciate your help.
