I made a pattern in one section and it sounded fine. Yet when entering another section of the Pattern mode song, in section C, and creating a step recording, using another voice (Sax) then returning to section B, now the voice of the guitar has suddenly changed to Saxophone. Is that an error or how to avoid that?

It is not like I copied the original patch from B to C then changing it. I know that would also change the original voice in section B.

What’s up?

I presume that you inserted a Program Change (PC) message at the top of Section C to select the sax. (If that’s not what you did, then please provide details.) If so, inserting a PC message at the top of the earlier Section(s) to select the guitar should resolve the problem.

Pc was not even turned on. I used the PAttern mode: SEquenser. No need for PC there.

PC = Program Change, not your computer.

How did you change Section C to sax?

I made it with the step sequencer program following the manual but choosing sax instead of the drum kit.

I was wondering....I assume every section has 16 fresh tracks at its disposition right? THere is no overlap there? I start with track one in each section.

Now I redid it. SO I am in section C. I simply change to section D. We are in Pattern mode.

THen I click EDIT and click the Switch to Off, to not have the arpeggiator (I just improvise, not in the manual) because it strikes me arpeggiator is not wanted now.

I exit and click REC. THen set it to STEP. But I can not set the step length but when I click PLAY I learn it is 1/16th notes. I choose sax, then copy the event to all 4 measures.

THen I replay it and it is ok. I save it with store.

Now I go back to Section C and the Sax is playing there. What’s up???

I made it with the step sequencer program following the manual but choosing sax instead of the drum kit.

There’s a difference between Drum Voices and Normal Voices. With a Drum Voice each key can have a different sound, so you can stay with the same Voice and still have the sound change for each Section. With Normal Voices (guitar, sax, etc.) you have to select a different Voice. When you do that the way you have done it, the Voice will change for all the Sections on the Track.

Yes, in Pattern mode there are 16 Tracks, each having 16 Sections available.

If you want to have a different Normal Voice per Section on the same Track, then you’ll need to edit the Sections and insert a PC at the top of certain Sections. See [F5]INSERT on pages 84-86 of the MOXF Reference Manual.

If you don’t want to use PC messages, then you’ll have to place each Voice in a different Part on separate Tracks. That’s the way it’s typically done. You might want to look at the demo Patterns.

Look above. We posted simultaneously

I thought the section was the first level and under each section 16 tracks. SO a-p sections with each 16 tracks.

I suggest that you look above. What you added to your previous post while I was replying doesn’t change what I wrote.

DOn’t you mean section instead of part? The structure seems a bit cryptic at first. Or maybe you mean patch which I understand as the finalized section right

No, I meant what I said. I capitalized “Part” to help make it clearer that I’m using the term the way Yamaha does. For example, see Part Edit for Mixing Mode beginning on page 117 of the MOXF Reference Manual. You also seem to be confusing “Patch” and “Phrase”. Patch is the function used in Pattern mode to assign Phrases to Sections.

Yes, I know that Yamaha terminology can be confusing.  :-)

Getting back to the original issue:
Using the scenario from your initial post…
Record guitar to Section B of a Track (Track 1, perhaps).
Select a sax Voice for a different Track (Track 2?), and record on that Track to Section C.

If you play the demo Patterns, Solo the Tracks one by one, and select Sections, you’ll see how they are typically done.

THanks a lot :-) Yes you are right I meant phrase. I could only see the word patch in my menu so I confused them.

THe way I saw things from reading the manual was like this:

One can choose to create a number of different sections that are pieces to use for the song in which ever order one chooses.

But after consulting you I see there are only 16 tracks (sufficient for a song) and that changing the Section does not change the voice on the track (except for drums one can record using another drum from another key). I still need to learn how to get different arpeggio versions for the different sections, unless I have to make different drum tracks each with another variation of say the funk drum rhythm I have chosen as the back bone.

SO One can make a-p sections, each containing a unique selection of those same 16 tracks.

I figure that when one wants to make a song one could choose the sounds like this: BAsically some bass, some drums in every section of the song, then some piano then guitar.
However sometimes the piano is solo sometimes the guitar so one uses a guitar riff for say section A, along with drums and bass then leaves out the piano riff in section A. SO Section A/Phrase consists of 3 tracks: Drums, bass and guitar.

THen in the actual song where these phrases/Sections are being used, one can play the piano real time, while the guitar riff is playing/ Looping.

THen throughout this song one selects another Phrase/section with the piano playing a simple backing patterns/loop (SO drums, bass and piano placed in section B in 3 tracks: TWo of which are copies of the Drums and bass from section A and the 4th track (since the 3 is used for guitar in section A) is used for the piano riff). Now in the actual song one can play the Guitar as the lead voice.

THis is what I understood from your words, but I will look into the manual tomorrow as well, since it is night now here.

Thank you
D

I expanded my reply from 1 sentence to an example of how I believe the functionality is to be implemented. Still need to do a read up in the ref manual.

You’re getting closer, but don’t conflate “Phrase” and “Section”. A Section can have a different Phrase on each of the 16 Tracks, although a Phrase could be copied to multiple Tracks. Doing that can be useful if you want the same notes to be played simultaneously by two or more different sounds.

Indeed, do some reading, and if you would like further clarification, just ask.
