I’ve looked around the forum to find out more about how the flash memory board works in the Motif XF and the new MOXF.  As I understand it, with the board installed the board will come up as an alternate storage location for my voices/performances/songs, etc.  I can then call them up any time to use on the board.

And I can also purchase and download 3rd party voices and store them on the board, right?  I’m assuming you connect your PC to the keyboard via USB cable and then run an install program on the PC that sends the sounds into the keyboard - is that correct?  Does this program let you choose where the 3rd party sounds would be stored on the flash board?

Is there anything else an installed flash memory board would give me in the MOXF?

NO VOICES, PERFORMANCES, or SONGS will be stored to the Flash Board.

Those are all STORED onboard to USER locations.

Only Sample Data is STORED to the Flash Board.  This will allow you to install 3rd party (or your own) sounds that include new sample data. The simplest/most common way that new sample data is STORED to the Flash Board is via USB thumb drive plugged into the keyboard.  However, it is also possible to LOAD this type of data directly via a network connection between your computer and the keyboard

There are many 3rd party libraries that do not include any new samples, and they will not need or utilize the Flash Board.  These libraries use the Sample data already native to the machine to create new VOICES and PERFORMANCES...which again, will be STORED in USER BANK locations.

Search the Support area for articles on Flash Expansion (You will find this type of info in the XF section until a MOXF section is configured).

Verify the file types first.

These libraries may be offered in the XS file format only, which the XF can read...hence they are usable for both the XS and XF.

The MOXF cannot read XS files...however, it can read XF files.

That said, I am sure you will not need to wait very long before many of these libraries...which did not require updating from the XS to the XF because of compatibility between the two...will now be updated to versions that the MOXF can utilize.

The MOXF also read libraries made specifically for the MOX… which of course, did not include any user sample data, but to be technically correct. The MOXF is completely compatible with the previous MOX… including all file types and all types of data.

The compatibility with the Motif XF is limited to:
VOICES (including sampled data)
PERFORMANCES
USER ARPEGGIOS
MIX TEMPLATES
WAVEFORMS

For the “half-empty” folks: That means no compatibility with sequencer data. The sequencer data can be moved over using SMF (Standard MIDI File) format for transferring data (.MID)

Sampled Waveforms created/recorded to the Integrated Sampling Sequencer are compatible and can be transferred to the MOXF. In fact, that is the only thing that is extracted when you open a Motif XF .X3S (ALL SONG) or .X3P (ALL PATTERN) file: the MOX will read the WAVEFORM and place it on your FLASH BOARD.

Yes. Presuming that the sounds were based on internal ROM samples, or that Samples/Waveforms were already stored on an (optional) flash module, the loading time could be quite short.

In addition, User Voices could be stored as Mixing Voices, providing up to another 256 locations. See my post here:
