Hi guys, I’m trying out a little experiment using the XS as a controller via usb midi into an ipad pro.

What would be ideal for what I had in mind would be to use a performance patch with one or two XS sounds and then use the usb midi vst in there, too, as one of the four patches available. Then I could layer and zone.
I haven’t looked into using the mix mode yet, but I suppose that could also be a possibility.

Can I have one voice in performance mode send to, say midi channel 3 on my ipad and use the fader to control that sound?
I noticed, so far, that the global keyboard midi channel setting in utility mode is what I have to use to get the right midi channel activating my vst. Is that all I can do?

Anyone with some ideas or info that might help?
TIA and cheers.

Although a Performance can have up to four Parts, they’re all addressed on a single MIDI channel. Song and Pattern modes are multitimbral, and up to 16 channels can be transmitted on. If you want to start with a Performance, it can be copied to a Song/Pattern Mixing, where the Parts will be placed on separate channels by default.

Depending on exactly what level of control of external devices you might need, Master mode may be useful.

Thank you for the quick reply. I see from reading your links that Master mode is what I’m looking for to control internal and external sounds simultaneously.
I’ve owned this board for such a long time and haven’t explored the Master mode much but it looks like this is a very powerful feature of the XS.
So, just a quick question and please forgive me for any incorrect terminology or syntax: I can zone the ipad through USB midi on its own assigned midi channel in Master mode as if it were in Performance mode but enhanced to a certain degree?

A Master is associated with either a Voice, Performance, Song, or Pattern - it adds certain functionality to those Programs. Based on what you’ve said, it appears that using a Song/Pattern Mixing to set up the required Parts, and then associating a Master with it for the additional control, is likely appropriate for your needs.

I suggest that you refer to the support articles and begin setting things up. Then, if you get stuck on something, post and we’ll try to help with whatever the issue is.

So, I’m working in Master mode and see the zone assignments in edit mode. Can I edit one of the performance parts, say part 3, to zone 3?

Just because a Performance can be associated with a Master doesn’t mean that it changes the basics of how a Performance works. All the Parts of a Performance are on the same MIDI channel. If you copy a Performance to a Song/Pattern, then channel assignment can be independently set.

In a Song or Pattern Mixing, each of the 16 Parts can be on any one of 16 MIDI Receive Channels. Each of the 16 Tracks can transmit on any one of the 16 channels. If all you want to do is have the XS able to play some Parts internally, and transmit note data to an external device on one channel, then a Song or Pattern are probably sufficient. In that case, Master mode isn’t required.

For Song mode, see Track Channel Settings - [SF1] Out (Output Channel) on page 184 of the XS Owner’s Manual.

If for some reason a Song/Pattern Mixing isn’t adequate for your needs, then please explain what it is you’re unable to accomplish in those modes.
