Can we set the date for data save on the MOXF?

No. Although the MOXF has a processor, unlike most computers there’s no real-time clock.

EDIT: You could include the date in the name of the file. Two digits each for year, month, day only uses six of the 20 available characters. I suggest that order for the date, placed at the beginning of the name. That way you can search filenames on a computer, and the files will sort in order of date.

For example…
160430MotifVoiceFile.X6V
160928MotifVoiceFile.X6V
171031MotifVoiceFile.X6V
171101MotifVoiceFile.X6V

The MOXF (at least mine) does only support 8+3 Filenames. So you’ll have only 2 characters after the 6 digit date. Real bummer, I know ;)

It’s true that naming files on the MOXF is limited to the old MS-DOS 8+3. However, there’s nothing to prevent renaming the file on a computer, using additional characters.

The XF allows filenames of 20 (+3) characters to be entered on it. (By the way, the XF will recognize filenames having several more characters.) The MOXF is compatible with XF files, and will recognize those named with longer than 8+3 characters.

As an experiment I’ve zipped and attached an XF file, 171125XFfactoryTest.X3A, which is just an “All” file with XF factory content, the name being 19+3 characters. I’d appreciate knowing how that displays on the MOXF, although I suspect it just truncates the name. Please let us know.

Thanks for that information. So as I thought, longer filenames can be used on a computer and they can still be seen by the MOXF, although shortened when displayed.

Your welcome.

The only way I can see to shorten a date field is to make it a bit cryptic, for instance like this:

1 = 2001 = 1
2 = 2002 = 2
.
10 = 2010 = A
11 = 2011 = B
12 = 2012 = C
.
30 = 2030 = T
31 = 2031 = U
.
35 = 2035 = Y
36 = 2036 = Z

That covers all months, days and years until 2036 in 3 characters, keeps sorting working properly and leaves 5 characters for a name instead of 2.

Another way is to put stuff in folders:
..2017
....NOVEMBER or NOV or 11
......25XFTEST.X3A

That leaves 6 characters for a name.

That would work, but it’s indeed cryptic. A file created today, assuming year/month/day order (2017/Nov/29), would look like…
  HBS*****.X6*
I don’t find HBS to be particularly intuitive.

In addition, when placed on a USB flash drive, if not in a separate folder such a filename would get commingled with other files having alpha characters.

Yes, but then files from the same day of the month, but a different year or month, might be named identically. To prevent possible confusion, they would have to be kept in a folder structure no matter where they existed.

It seems MOXF users who want to identify their files by date will have to choose how to name them. Fortunately for me, the XS and XF don’t have the same limitations on filename length.

Even without a date the filenames are to short.

For me it’s a mystery why Yamaha only allowed short filenames on the MOXF. It’s like going back in time.
By rearranging the display or making a 2nd page, there would be room for longer names, but my guess is that it won’t happen. :-(

I can provide some insight…

The MOXF sounds very similar to the Motif XF, but certain things were done to keep costs down.

The XS and XF run on MontaVista Linux. The owner’s manuals for those models include notices of GNU public licensing, and source code is available from Yamaha. Linux can accommodate very long filenames.

The MOXF manual has no such notice, and I don’t know specifically what it runs on. However, whatever it is, it apparently has filename length restrictions similar to good old DOS.
