From the latest Yamaha Music Production Guide 03/2015 a new free bank full of sounds based on samples from Yamaha’s rare VP1 synthesizer.

Thx for the post Meatball....I just downloaded the 500+ MB file but will wait a bit before loading. 

I WOULD be interested if anyone who’s loaded the soundset to report on the library and what we can expect.

Just got around to loading it up. Surprisingly, for all the samples in the file there are only 48 voices.

The power of what physical modeling can do is displayed in the two voices that end the set, an electric piano and an acoustic piano. The latter is not super realistic but you can hear the strings! Remember, these sounds were synthesized on the VP1, not sampled.  I used to have the VL board for my Motif ES but it never sounded like this.

There are two brass patches to die for, combining the fat sound of an Oberheim polysynth with a punch only digital can provide. 

I was expecting some flute, sax and clavinet voices but there are none. The focus is on synthetic sounds and there’s a good number of pads.

The many effect and arp voices are a mixed bag but all are well programmed. I don;t think I’ll be keeping many of them.

Aftertouch is used in almost every voice, sometimes to startling effect and there is good use of the ribbon and AF switches in most voices. This makes the voices very responsive to your playing.

Since it’s a free library, it’s a no brainer to check it out.  Just set aside some time to back up your flash board first before loading. I didn’t time the load, but it’s not quick.

Tip: Use the Melas waveform editor to open the VP1 library All file, select the voices you want to keep, then copy them into into your backup All file. Save this edited file with a new name (to preserve your backup file). The new file will contain only the waveforms needed for the voices you chose to keep, saving valuable space on your flash board.
