Hi all, I have a Motif XS rack and that is linked to a Roland XV5050 both play no problem but when I change patches on the Motif it changes everything on the Roland!! Any ideas what settings on the Motif or Roland that I need to change please so that the Roland will stay on the patch that I want it on?

You have a Yamaha rack unit and a Roland rack unit, and presumably a keyboard controller of some sort, all connected via MIDI.

Also, presumably, you want to layer sounds from both rack units. Is that correct?

Exactly how do you have the MIDI INs, OUTs, and THRUs of your gear interconnected?

I have an Akai EWI5000 midi in to the Motif midi out of Motif to the Roland which plays both the Motif And Roland no problem.
But what I want is lets say, have a certain patch on the Motif and a certain patch on the Roland I may keep the same on the Roland for a few numbers but when I change the patch on the Motif it changes the patch on the Roland which I don’t want it to do.

I looked at the EWI5000 documentation and looks like it sends on only a single MIDI channel.  Controlling multiple synths is usually done by using different MIDI channels, so a program change on one channel does not effect the other synths.

You may need to reprogram the synth patches so you create separate layers for every possible sound combination you want to use.  This may mean you have sound A as Patch #20, #35 and #47 on your Roland, but it should accomplish what you want.  So define Patch #1, to be exactly what you want on both synths, then Patch #2 to be exactly what you want.  One drawback is you will get duplicates.

That’s good, but it doesn’t help anyone else who might look at this thread.

Possible ways of dealing with the original situation:
On the Motif-Rack XS, Prg Change Sw (Program Change Switch) can be set to “off”. That would prevent the Motif from sending Program Change messages to the Roland. However, it would also prevent the Motif from receiving Program Changes, if any were being sent from the EWI. See page 100 of the Motif-Rack XS Owner’s Manual.

On the XV-5050, Global Rx Prog Change (Receive Program Change Switch) can be set to “OFF”. That would prevent the Roland from acting on Program Change messages sent by the Motif. See page 108 of the XV-5050 Owner’s Manual.

Sorry 5pinDIN.  I did the latter, Global Rx prog change sw to off.

Thanks for confirming which approach you used.
