Hello:

I recently bought a used Motif Rack ES.I’ve noticed that
every time I rewind my sequence in DP 8, the volume of the patch
in the Motif drops. If I touch the fader in DP it pops back up to full volume. This seems to be a problem with the Motif only. I’ve tried other plug-ins etc. and the volume stays the same.

Can anyone help me with this issue? It seems to be getting some sort of CC7, 11 message everytime I rewind the sequence, or simply change to a new patch. I’m in Voice mode on the Motif ES.I simply want to keep the volume up to 127 when I rewind or switch patches. I’ve also tried changing in the Utility/CTRL Reset/Hold, and this doesn’t make any difference.

Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Tom

The Motif-Rack ES makes no decisions on its own. A GM RESET command or similar can return all Volumes to 100. I do not know DP8 but if it sends a reset command the receiving devices have no choice.

You should STORE the MULTI in the Motif-Rack ES at the Volumes you want the unit to reset to - the unit has 128 Multi setups that you can store your particular setups.

Also the Motif-Rack ES is not a plug-in, it’s hardware with the ability to store its own setting right on board, (if you choose to use that facility) however, if you send commands from your DAW (DP8) it will follow those commands.

you need to verify exactly what it sent from DP8 when the transport is returned to the top… as I said, the Motif-Rack ES makes no decisions on its own.

I spoke with Tech Support and they said DP is not sending
any command on its own. They thought that what’s happening is
each time I reque my sequence in DP is receiving some sort of patch change or reset command which is causing the volume on the Motif ES Rack to default back to 100 instead of 127.

Can you suggest anything I can check on the Motif to confirm
whether or not this is happening, and how I can get it to stop
doing this?

Thanks,

Tom

1) Are you working with GM Files?
2) Are you using Bank Select and Program Change data to recall a Motif-Rack ES Multi?
3) To what volume are the PARTs in the Motif-Rack ES set?

1) Are you working with GM Files?

NO- I’m simply using the Motif ES Rack in Voice mode and recording
short sequences into DP 8.For example, I’ve selected the patch
“Bells Chorus” in Voice mode and recorded a 15 sec. midi sequence with that patch in Digital Performer.

2) Are you using Bank Select and Program Change data to recall a Motif-Rack ES Multi?

No-as I mentioned, I’m not even using Multi’s at this point. Just individual patches in Voice mode. When I’m auditioning patches from DP, I will select different patches from the patch list within DP.I don’t do this while recording, just when I’m auditioning sounds.

3) To what volume are the PARTs in the Motif-Rack ES set?

OK- I did some checking within the edit in Voice mode in the Motif. I noticed the volume was set at 127 before recording my sequence in DP. Just to make sure I would push the channel fader up all of the way in DP so the volume read “127.” in the Motif. Then I would record
the part in DP and the volume level was full at 127.

After recording the part (using Bells Chorus patch), I would rewind the sequence in DP, while watching the display in edit mode on the Motif Rack. The volume still reads 127, but when I start play back the sequence, the volume level in the Motif display (edit mode) now
switches to 73, instead of staying at 127.Somehow the Motif is resetting itself each time I either audition patches, or replay
a sequence.

UPDATE!

I found a workaround. If I use the automation in DP and record the fader move up to 127, the patch level stays at 127 when I play back the sequence. Are there any other settings in the Motif that will
keep the volume at 127 without using automation in DP. Do I have to save the setting as a Multi in the Motif in order for it to stay?

When checking the volume levels of different patches in the voice mode , I did notice that the default volume levels of the patches vary considerably. For example, the patch “Bells Chorus” the default volume is 73, while other patches have a default level
of 120, etc.
