My xf connects to macbook pro via firewire and works well with cubase a15 and garageband.  I want to add electric guitar and vocals for amateur recording.  I need to keep things as simple as possible; the motif and cubase are really way over my ability.  Garageband is more my speed.

Should I use an external audio device with usb connection to add the mics, keep the motif firewire connection, and confgure the macbook’s aggregate audio input?  Or should I run the motif through the audio interface via midi, analogue, or usb, along with the mics?  I could also run the mics through the xf and not add an audio interface.  Please advise.  Thanks

With this as your introduction, why not just plug the microphone directly into the Motif XF?

Did you know you don’t have to add anything at all other than the microphone? You can record your electric guitar directly to the XF, you can record your microphone directly to the XF.

You have 128Mb of SDRAM on-board ... So if adding an external audio interface or adding the FW16E seems beyond your own admitted beginner status… Then why not try what you’ve already paid for, see how good your results can be with just what you have.

If you are totally disappointed then go ahead and buy some extra stuff that will be over your head and you can then “suffer through” that learning curve of adding new devices drivers etc. :-)

Simply plug you guitar or your mic (one at a time) to one of the AD INPUTs of the XF.

I placed the mic in front of my guitar amp and connected it to the motif as you described.  I am now able to record into garage band and listen and play back through my monitors.  This is a great simple start, and I can explore other more sophisticated options at my leisure.  Thanks for making it easy.  You are a great resource!
