Hi. Using the “Vintage 74” default electric piano voice for an example, how do you assign/program the modulation wheel to turn off/lower the volume of the default left/right pan effect when the modulation wheel is in the “down” position, and to turn on/raise the volume of the default left/right pan effect when the modulation wheel is in the “up” position? Thank you

Since you selected the Preset Voice “Vintage’74” you can discover how the original programmer dealt with this: (they used on of the Assignable Function buttons to defeat the pan effect)

Press [EDIT]
Press [COMMON]
Press [F4] CTL SET (Controller Setup)
Use buttons [SF1]-[SF3] to view SET 1/2, 3/4 and 5/6

Here you will discover the assignment of physical controllers in the six Controller Setups:
MW is the LFO speed of the Auto Pan effect assigned to INS A
AF1 when On will reduce the L/R panning
AS1 when increased will increase drive to the Compressor/Distortion INS B
AS1 also increases the freq of the LPF in the Comp/Distortion
AS1 also reduces the Edge parameter in INS B
AS2 increases the Send amount to the Flanger (Chorus Send)

You can accomplish your goal by using the ASSIGNABLE FUNCTION 1 button, or you can reprogram this Control Set.

If you don’t want the MW changing the LFO Speed you can set the Depth = 0
Change Set 2 from SOURCE = AF1 to MW
As you raise the MW it applies a negative value to increasing the L/R Pan thus decreasing the Auto Pan. The DEPTH being a negative value cause the pan effect to be reduced when the wheel is raised.

Anticipating the next question: How come setting the DEPTH parameter being set positive does not increase the Pan effect?
The answer is, it does, but returning the MW to minimum does not set the Pan L/R Depth to zero, it only returns it to its original Pan Depth value. To “bias” this parameter to the position of the MW you must go into the INSERT B parameters and set the Auto Pan’s “L/R DEPTH” = 0.
0 being the default value sent by the MW when a program is recalled will now set allow panning to be nil when the Voice is recalled, and as you position the wheel (which only sends positive values) you increase the Pan Depth of the Auto Pan Effect.

Press [F6] EFFECT
Press [SF1] CONNECT
Here you see the various Effect blocks
Enter editing INS A by pressing [SF2] INS A
Use the [<]/[>] cursor to navigate the screens of this effect’s parameters
Set the parameter L/R DEPTH = 0
Now when you position the MW its value will increase the Pan Depth

Just to complete the controller exploration: AF2 will bring in a pad Element adding a synth layer to the Electric Piano sound. This is done with the XA CONTROL (expanded articulation control) programmed on the individual Oscillator > Wave selection screen. XA Control allows dynamic control over how your eight oscillators behave within the Voice. Engaging the [AF2] button compels Element 6 to activate, “AF2 On”, thus adding the “Dark Light” pad Waveform.
