The articles will give you an overview of the Master mode and some tips. But for details about its workings and features the Reference Manual is extremely valuable and remains required reading!

I think the biggest concept to grasp is that MASTER mode is always going to be combined with a VOICE, with a PERFORMANCE, a SONG or a PATTERN.

Notice that two MODE lights are lit:
MASTER + VOICE
MASTER + PERFORM
MASTER + SONG
MASTER + PATTERN

It depends on the data in the associated (linked) mode. It is just a set of “pointers” and “offsets”

Huge thanks for the Tutorial,Bad Mister!
Printed out for reference!

Yes that was a great article on Master Mode, however I note the “Download this article in PDF format” is disabled...is this to be available in the future for downloading I wonder?

Yeah, I’ll wait a while, get some user feedback, make some more corrections, then post the PDF… No time right now to do that…

I ported the article over from the Motif series, making the appropriate changes (because in spite of general thought) the operating systems, the location of functions, etc., are very different from the XS or XF. I usually don’t like to do it that way… I rather like to do each product with its own approach, but so much is going on…

Please be patient. The manuals actually cover the MASTER mode features in great detail. I try to give it some application perspective… As you can see from the questions that most people’s first impression (wrongly) is that it exists as a separate thing when it actually simply organizes the other mode’s programs.

You can tell when some one does not see what it is when they ask can they load a single MASTER.

5pinDIN’s observation about the size of a Master program when you bulk dump it reveals it does not include the Voice data, it does not include the Performance data, it does not include the Song data, it does not include the Pattern data… It only “points” to that data. Once you understand this… You are well on your way to understanding what a Master program is… A convenient way to organize your data.

It is a set of pointers and offsets applied to programs that exist elsewhere in memory!
Remove those things that the Master points to and the master program simply points to the new data that occupies the location.

I will try this tutorial word by word this weekend!:)

There is some leftovers from the original Motif tutorial.
nothing serious....that does not bother me at all.

Just reading trough it and I can see that there is lots of things I missed or I had misinterpret!

Thx - I am happy to wait. I actually “get” master mode, and I am in the process of setting up various gig-rigs now. The version you inserted (your above post) was very informative and I got a lot out of it, enough to enable proper setups. So I guess the PDF version I may not eventually need, but I would love to have it on file for future “refer back” capability :-)
