I am ending a 20 year love affair with the SY99 (disk drive finally died), and have come kicking and screaming into modernization with the purchase of an MOXF6.  I primarily used my SY99 for the on-board sequencing, which was incredibly easy to use.  In looking through the MOXF6 manual to learn about how to record songs, it seems much more complicated/there seem to be so many more steps to setting up a song.

Are there any video tutorials available somewhere that demonstrate setting up a song and recording?  Sometimes watching something explained is a little easier than reading/trial and error.

Also, with the ability to connect to a computer… I notice that there seems to be the capability of editing the sounds on the computer, but it saves your edits in the keyboard.  Does that capability exist for recording/sequencing as well?  In other words, some kind of computer interface so that you are able to do editing of recorded work on the computer, but save the song on the keyboard.  And, if this capability exists, does it exist out of the box, or would it require additional software?  I don’t have Cubase or ProLogic or anything like that.  The SY99 sequencer was so convenient, I just never really had a need.

The SY99 was not easy, not intuitive and not any different from learning what sits in front if you now. Why it does seem so is because you’ve been using it for twenty years!!!!

The first twenty minutes on the MOXF are not going to afford you the mastery of 20 years using the SY99. Because I’ve been with Yamaha back then as well, I remember the SY and no way was it easier.

Instead of just one Pattern track… You now have 16. Back in the SY you were limited to just drums on the Pattern track, track 16. While there were 15 linear tracks

Here the PATTERN mode is 16 tracks and there are no restrictions to what instruments you can use.
You can construct you entire composition by assembling musical SECTIONS. A SECTION can be as short as a measure and as long as 256 measures in length. Sections automatically cycle (loop) on playback, making working out ideas quick and easy.

Sections can be “chained” together creating a playback order and then can be converted to a linear Song.

Or you can simply work out you own method of recording. Song mode is linear recording.
Direct Performance Record allows you to assemble as many as four sounds, place some under control of arpeggiators (there are four of them) and record directly from Performance mode to four tracks of the sequencer.

Bad_Mister, I may be misunderstanding your posts but will there be a new DVD made for the MOXF any time soon or will the ‘Understanding the MOX’ DVD be the best resource for a while?

The MOX DVD covers 95% of what you need to know about the basics of the MOXF. We have briefly discussed a DVD concerning some of the more advanced uses for the FLASH Board option in the MOXF. Beside how to load and manage the Flash Library, we want to cover how to creat audio “stems” in your DAW and export them for use in the MOXF sequencer.
