Would I be able to store a voice in a transposed key?
In other words, take a voice like piano, copy it and and store it as a “user voice” transposed 4 steps higher?

How many “user” voices can be stored internally? Can more user voices be stored externally via USB?  Can they be accessed and played directly from the USB connection or do they need to be imported back into the keyboard first?

Thanks

Welcome to the forums!

Yes it is possible, but as you’ll learn the parameter is called different things depending on where you are. If you are editing a USER VOICE you affect it’s tuning via the COARSE TUNE within each Element.
However, if you place the VOICE in a PERFORMANCE, then one of the Performance PART parameters is NOTE SHIFT. Each PART can be tuned up or down -24/+24 semitones as necessary.

The COARSE TUNE parameter is found in the original Voice, the NOTE SHIFT parameter is a Part Offset. Both are parameters of the tone engine. These settings do not affect what goes OUT via MIDI… And can be set on an individual basis.

The TRANSPOSE parameter is considered a transmitting function and is what the keybed sends OUT to the tone engine and OUT via MIDI… it affects everything.

Editing the VOICE’s Coarse Tuning requires the Editor (mentioned below).

How many “user” voices can be stored internally?

128 normal User Voices and 8 User Drum kits.

Can more user voices be stored externally via USB?  Can they be accessed and played directly from the USB connection or do they need to be imported back into the keyboard first?

When you save a FILE to a USB stick it creates an ALL data file (.X5A) which will contain all user settings including your 128 Performances, 128 User Voices, 8 Drum Kits and your Utility mode settings. While you can store data to a USB stick, these USB devices have not come so far as to be fast enough to support the kinds of simultaneous polyphony you get in the MX - so, yes you must load them into the keyboard.

Announced at Musik Messe a few weeks ago and just released is the John Melas MX Tools… Which will give those wishing in depth editing an opportunity to get to the full compliment of functions… Down to the Element level of editing.

A basic ides of how the internal memory can be used and accessed… is the 128 Performances are stored in Flash ROM and can be made from any of the over 1106 normal Preset Voices, 61 drum Preset kits or 128 normal User Voices, 8 drum User kits. Each Performance gives access to sixteen PARTs each Part contains one Voice.

The 128 User Voices and 8 Drum Kits can be thought of as those that YOU customize for specific purposes. Either for use in a Multi-timbral sequencing situation, or a “live” Performance play situation. These can be your 128 absolute favorite tweaked Voices. If, for example, you have a Voice you like but you want to change the assigned Insertion Effect… You would edit the Preset and STORE your version of this Voice in the USER bank.

The external Voice Editor will allow you to get down to editing at the Element level, similar to how you can on the MOX and Motif-series. From the MX TOOLS you can BULK Voices to the MXs Edit Buffer and/or Store them to an internal location.

The MX does not have the ability to LOAD a single Voice from a USB stick… Single Voices can be managed via BULK DUMP as from an Editor or Sysex dump.

Thanks BadMr!
I’ve got an MX49 on hold. That was the info I needed. It hits the mark close enough for me to go ahead.

One final question (for now). Am I reading your reply correctly?  128 “performances” can be stored in the internal memory and in addition, 128 user voices can be stored? Performance storage does not affect user voice storage capacity and vice versa?

Thanks so much for your help!

That is correct. Don’t forget there is room for eight User Drum Kits VOICES as well.

Hey BadMr

I found that Melas MX Tools voice editor download. It is a demo with option to buy. I probably won’t use it all that much. Is there any freeware voice editor for the MX for Windows XP?

Thanks

No, not that I am aware of ... The VycroMX Performance Editor is available for free download at:

http://VycroMX.com

But this is a Performance Editor.

Hey BadMr

Thanks again for your patience and help.  I think in most cases the Vycro editing options for Performances will be good enough, maybe even preferable.  There are a few voices I would like to tweak more specifically that may require the Melas voice editor but maybe not. I’m still exploring all these great built in sounds!
