I am trying to load a MIDI file that was recorded on a Yamaha PSR S-550B on my Motif. I had this file copied to a pen drive and tried loading it to my Motif, so I could change some voices and do some edits before I can send it as a finalized track to be used for a program. However, when I connect the Pen drive to the Motif and press the file button, the MIDI file is not listed even with type set to all. Scrolling through the type, I am not able to find anything like SMF or anything similar to force it to look for the particular file.

The scenario is this. I use Motif at my home studio and a PSR S550B at my Church. Due to practical constraints, it is always not possible to transport my Motif for all programs, specially when our team sings only one or two songs. So what I intend to do is, play on the PSR S-550B during practices, and record as I play on the keyboard. Once that is done, I’d copy the midi file to a pendrive and load it to my Motif, where I can make changes like change the voice, or cut certain parts in certain regions of the song .. and also be able to record each part on its own audio track in Pro tools where I can further tweak as required.

I am surprised I am not able to load the Midi file on the Motif. I’m quite sure I am missing something, but am not sure what it is. Any help would be highly appreciated as I have a Midi file to be converted to a audio file for a program this weekend.

On the Motif:
Press [SONG] to enter the Song mode
Identify an empty Song location 01-64 that you want to use for this data
Press [FILE]
Set the TYPE = “song”
Move the cursor to highlight the File name with the .mid extension
press [ENTER]
Set the target to the Song location to which you want to load this data, then proceed to load the data to the song location.

.mid files can only be loaded to your Motif in a mode in which the Motif can use the data, and that would be either Song or Pattern modes (the sequencer modes). If you select a Pattern you must additionally target a Pattern Section A-P.

When you set the File Type to “ALL” this indicates a type of Motif file, one that can be created only by another Motif and contains “all” the user data that a Motif can generate, User Voices, Performances, Master programs, user arpeggios, user Songs, user Patterns and all the user phrases, plus all of your Utility settings.

All means all the Motif Data.

A Standard MIDI File (.mid) is not a Motif specific file, and you will only see items listed in the screen if the Motif can open it or load it. And this is context sensitive… If you have. word document or a PDF file on you USB drive, the Motif will never show its name because, in none of its modes can a Motif do anything with those file types.

And this goes a step farther, you can, as above, only see .mid files when you enter File mode from SONG or PATTERN mode… It is efficient and fairly logical when you think about it… You want o load a .mid file so you can play it back with the Motif sequencer, so enter File mode from the sequencer mode.

Thanks for your quick reply. That is it. I had not gone into song mode before I entered file mode.

That sounds logical. and Yes I am aware of the difference between Midi and Motif Song data. But in this case I am transferring the performance from another Keyboard - PSR S-550B to Motif. And AFAIK, the best way to do this would be to use Midi. Would appreciate if you could share if there is any better way to do it.
