I took a Cubase Class and discovered an awful noise. I completed the class vowing not to use Cubase a lot until I figured out the problem. I bought a tape to CD convertion unit and discovered the problem is my laptops sound card. How do I get rid of that awful sound for good, if possible?

Sorry, but you have not really given us much to go on. I can tell you that Cubase is not making the noise. Ground problems can arise in any computer based system. In your Cubase class did they recommend you use your computer’s soundcard? What type is it?

My laptop is an hp dv6-6140us. If I am not mistaken I do not have this problem with Cubase 5AI only with Cubase Elements 6. Did I change a setting in Cubase 5AI and forget to change that setting in Cubase Elements 6.I have a video tutorial from Total Training that is good for another week or so. It is for Cubase 4, but I would imagine that is what I used to set up my Cubase 5AI. Should I try that as a first attempt to solve this problem?
Also, if I make a sound card adjustment in Cubase, do I have to go back and reset it later to return to non-recording functions on my laptop or is it reset automatically?

Oh, because in your first post you clearly say you are using your laptop’s soundcard (which would not be good). Now you have to determine whether the sound (noise) you are hearing is actually a ground noise.

Like we cannot see your sound card, we cannot hear the noise either. As a test, try briefly, running your computer on batteries - if the noise disappears, you can conclude it is indeed a ground issue. Let us know.

Also, disable the laptop’s internal soundcard.  And, I would also disable system sounds as well.
