Viewing topic "How do you play what you’ve recorded on the pattern mode of the motif xs8 to a computer and have it play back exactly as it sounded on the synth?"

Hey Guys,
I bought myself a motif xs8 few months back.  It was bundled with a copy of Cubase 4.1.2.  I also believe my synth has an integrated mLan Adaptor that comes with it. My questions will assume that ya’ll know the xs interface.

For the past few months I’ve recorded some compositions off of the pattern mode on the xs8 and my first question is basic.

How do I simply take what I’ve recorded on the xs8 and transfer it to the computer and have it playback my music exactly as it was recorded.

The last time I tried, I recorded the composition as an XOE file at first, and when that failed, I tried saving it as a Midi file afterwards and both file types did not run properly on cubase 4.1.2..however the midi file format ran on quicktime but the quality was terrible.  Instruments could not be heard and there was no bass.  Let it be known we use a macbook pro from 2007.

I don’t know if this is a factor but, I compose and record using a simple set of headphones right now.  I was thinking perhaps it’s the soundcard of the computer?

So my second question is why was it terrible and what are some of the factors that affect the quality of playback?  I simply want it to sound professional as it was designed to be.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks.

MIDI is just MIDI. When you playback a MIDI file in Quicktime, it just plays the notes from the MIDI file using it’s own sounds...it will not reproduce the Motif sounds!!!

As far as Cubase, you can record audio from the Motif into Cubase which can then be burned to a CD.

If you have sample RAM installed in your Motif you can resample your music, then export that sample as a WAV file to your computer for playback or to burn a CD.

If you can be a bit more clear about exactly what you’re trying to accomplish, we can describe the specific steps to follow to get the job done.

Thanks for the reply.

I want to take what i’ve recorded on the motif and transfer it to my computer so I can play it back and listen to it off my computer.

How do I do this properly?

That’s my question.

Your solution is to save it as a wav file on the ram and do it like that?

You can do so using the Motif XS’s AUDIO RECORD/PLAYBACK feature added in a recent update.

All that is required is a USB drive that you can plug into the TO DEVICE port on the Motif XS8
Record your audio as a 16-bit/44.1kHz .wav file - then move the drive over to your computer and there you have it.

Connect the USB stick to the Motif XS
Call up the SONG or PATTERN CHAIN you want to record
Press [FILE]
Press [F4] AUDIO
Press [SF1] REC
Give the FILE a NAME
Press [ENTER]
Set the Trigger Level = 1
This will allow recording to begin when the signal begins.
Press [ENTER] to arm the recorder “Waiting...”
Press the Seq PLAY button to begin sequence playback which will also begin audio recording.

The time remaining on your drive will be counted down (maximum record time is 74 min 00 sec

When complete press STOP.

Being new to the XF, I just tried this and it worked flawlessly! Nice..
Just one very peculiar thing is that I have voices that I panned to the left and right and when playing back the wave in my software (Logic) all of the pans are reversed.
Any ideas?

Are you listening to the XF and Logic over the same playback system? Check your cabling and make sure you don’t have L and R backwards somewhere.

I recorded the wave in the XF and transferred it to my software (Logic).
I’m not listening at all to the XF. I’m monitoring just playback of the wave and all of my pans that I mixed in the XF (Before recording the wave to USB stick) are reversed in my software.

No, my speakers and headphones are setup correctly and producing the same results?
I’m scratching my head on this one ..

Very simple way....on a mac
Step 1:Go to system preferences
Step 2: Go to sound
Step 3: Make your Input your audio interface. Mine is a firewire so i click FW.
Step 4: Download Quicktime Player.
Step 5: After installation, Open Quicktime Player.
Step 6: Click file
Step 7: Click new audio recording
Step 8: Open your song on your motif
Step 9: Click the record button on quicktime player.
Step 10: Click play on your keyboard.
Step 11: This records your song through quicktime as a .mov file.
Step 12: If you want it to be a .mp3 file, save it onto your desktop or wherever you would like.
Step 13: Open it in itunes and make sure it plays.
Step 14: Click it and click advanced on the top bar of your screen.
Step 15: Click, convert to mp3 or whatever.
You now have an mp3 version of your song!!!
