I have a Roland SH-201 and I want to be able to record a track in Song Mode on the MO8 while playing the Roland. I have the MIDI OUT from the Roland going to the MO 8 MIDI THRU. What do I need to do on the MO8 to get this to work? Do I need to change the channel on the Roland to 2 (the default is Channel 1)?

Thanks

Assuming that your are simply wanting to record the MIDI sequence generated by the SH-201, you should be connecting the MIDI OUT of the SH201 to the MIDI IN of the MO. You would then setup the SH-201 to transmit on the MIDI channel associated with the track that you want to record the MIDI sequence into on the MO.

The MO6 and MO8 have no ability to record audio (the sounds coming from the SH201. The Motif classic, Motif ES and Motif XS all have the ability to record audio samples of other instruments or microphones - assuming you have purchased and installed sample RAM in these instruments. That’s one of the trade-offs you made when you purchased a MO rather than one of these other products.

You could record a MIDI track of the part you wished played on the SH201 and then use the SH201 as a tone generator when you playback songs from the MO’s song sequencer.
