Hello,

In the last week I have tried my best to open midi-files with their original instrumentation, but so far I have not succeeded. The files open in multi-track format, but no instrument is assigned to any track, they simply appear as “instrument tracks”.

Is this a limitation with Cubase AI or am I missing something basic here?

Using the List Editor, at the header of each track can you see program change messages?

If so then what are you connecting to which you are expecting to make use of those messages? If they are GM midi files, on a motif you may need to do a GM reset in order for the voices to come out right.

Cheers

Thanks for the quick reply.

I have not yet connected the Motif XS8 to my PC. First I thought I’d check Cubase out, to get a feel for it. So I’m running it alone and trying to get the MIDI-files to play through the “Windows GS Wavetable SW Synth”.

The only way I can get some sort of sounds out of it, is to assign Halion to each track, and then select an instrument from there. This is not the way I “want” it to work, since it involves some fancy guess work, as to what instrument goes where.

On another note, I think I read somewhere, that Cubase AI can not handle Standard Midi Files with Markers, only the “fuller” versions do this… but surely AI should be able to load and play MIDI-files?!

In this scenario, I think your problem may be with the routing from Cubase and into your onboard soundcard.

Cubase can play back midi files. I do not think that AI woudl be restricted in this way.

I don’t have the time to do a trawl of many threads in the archive, but you may be helped to have a read down through some of them such as this one:

Cubase LE and Midi files

Hope this helps

Yes, but WHAT MIDI files and from where??? That’s important. You seem to be hoping that MIDI files from one source will behave exactly the same in another, and I’m sure that you realize that is not the case. Often editing is required....especially when it comes to program changes. The List Editor is your ‘friend’ for that sort of thing. Do your files even conform to GM standards for the various patches??
You also mention ““Windows GS Wavetable SW Synth”” I trust you mean that you are trying to run the MIDI files as ‘standalone’? As you know, it is recommended that you use a suitable digital audio interface with its own ASIO driver when working with audio in AI........frank
