is the only way to import midi files into the motif to record them in from a software sequencer? I noticed that you can save to a midi file from the motif but you cant load one in.

what I’m trying to do is slice up the midi of some songs I made with sonar and import 16 bar loop midi files (16 channels each) into pattern mode so I can remix the songs on the fly.

are there any tips on the most efficient way i can do this?

I do it all of the time.  There are, however, some types of MIDI files that won’t allow loading.

SMF isn’t even an option of file type you can load...so how are you loading them in?

i think i figured out the way to go...record the entire song in song mode from sonar, then use the convert song to pattern option to split up the song into patterns.

I think you can load MIDI files using a file type of SONG.

You can load .mid file either in SONG Type or PATTERN Type.
