Re: recording external sequencer to XS
Hi squid,
You CAN record sequence data from your SY77 to your XS, but not in the way you describe. You said you wanted the XS sequence recorder to ‘trigger the SY77’ to make the transfer - you actually have to do this the other way round, so the SY77 is triggering (actually sending a MIDI ‘Start’ signal) to the XS to start up the XS sequence recorder.
Here’s how to do it;
1 Hook up cables, SY77 MIDI OUT to XS MIDI IN.
2 Set XS to PATTERN MODE, go to a blank, new pattern number.
3 Press UTILITY - F5 - SF2 and set ‘MIDI SYNC’ to ‘MIDI’ (all as per instructions on p267 of the manual).
4 Press STORE - ENTER - YES.
The above procedure basically sets the XS up to receive your MIDI data from your SY77 and load it onto empty tracks in your 16-track XS sequencer. You with me so far? Good. Now.....
5 Return to PATTERN MODE
6 Select TRACK 1, set ‘RECORD TYPE’ to ‘REPLACE’
7 Dial in the number of measures you need to record in the MEASURE box. Since I assume you’re going to want to transfer your whole SY77 song - if the song’s 64 measures long, for example - set the MEASURE number to 64 or anything greater than this.
8 Now press ‘RECORD’ on the XS. You’ll notice that nothing happens - because in your setup stage above, you have set the MIDI sync to look for an external MIDI clock signal and ‘start’ message.
9 But.......Now press START on your SY77 sequencer - and the XS will fire into life, and simultaneously start recording what’s coming off your SY77.
That’s the process. The only thing you need to remember is that whilst recording MIDI data in this way in PATTERN MODE, the XS will only record ONE CHANNEL’S WORTH OF MIDI DATA AT A TIME - because sequencer track 1 corresponds to MIDI channel 1, track 2 is channel 2, and so on. So if your completed SY77 sequence consists of, say, five tracks recorded using five MIDI channels, you will need to REPEAT the above process, recording each track separately. So once you’ve recorded as above, select ‘track 2’ on the XS and do it all again, until all the SY77 data is captured on the corresponding XS sequencer tracks.
Once all your data is loaded onto the XS, return to UTILITY mode and re-set the MIDI clock to INTERNAL to allow you to control the tempo and clocking directly from the XS sequencer controls.
I hope that helps.
Best wishes
