Just switched to a new laptop.  XS Rack with Cubase AI 4 and an M Audio Keystaion Pro 88.  Getting sound from the controller and Rack when using my already created CPR files and also when using the Studio Manager as a stand alone with the rack without Cubase.  However when importing new midi files and attempting to play them in Cubase the only options in the Instrument section of the Project are “Halion One” and “NO VST Instrument” with the latter selected.  So when I play the freshly imported MIDI track....nothing.  Thanks.

Re: No VST Instrument?

This is due to your current setting in Cubase.
Go to FILE > PREFERENCES > MIDI > MIDI FILE

Uncheck the option that has Cubase Importing the data to INSTRUMENTS Tracks… Set your options up as follows:

http://files.keyfax.com/forums/user-files/437881-MIDIfile.JPG

By unchecking the option for “IMPORT TO INSTRUMENT TRACKS” Cubase will place each track on a MIDI track which you can then target the device that you wish to target.

“Preferences” are simply the settings you have selected for a particular function. If you want to assign the imported MIDI file to your own choice of tone generators - then you have APPLY the Preferences that allow this to happen.

Hope that helps.

Re: No VST Instrument?

As always.  Perfect response.  That did the trick.  Thanks.
