Been a while since I’ve posted anything...sometimes real life doesn’t leave time to do the fun things we want :-p

This is an overture of sorts...written to go along with a very specific story (or introduction to a story), which is as follows”

-Someone writing a desperate note by candle light in a tower.
-visual pans out to show that its a princess (go figure :-p ) asking for someone...anyone...to come to her rescue
-She then attaches the note to a bird (messenger pigeon maybe??)
-The bird takes flight!!  It doves and swoops passed the castle walls
-It makes its way past the center of town, where villagers are busy going about their daily activities (trading, shopping, etc) there are street performers all around
-The bird climbs from the center of the town to take in the panoramic view of the surround land (gorgeous and majestic).
-The bird flies out of sight…
-...enter a sleeping young man (a nomad) in the middle of a barren desert...the bird lands...he receives the letter...and begins his quest.

Sorry for the long-winded post.  I hope you enjoy.  /forums/images/icons/smile.gif alt=

Re: Legend : Overture

Now this is what i call music. And this is what i call a screen play.

“Breath taking” is the right word to describe this one.

Totally blown away with your performance.

1000000000 points and two thumbs up.

Cheers

Re: Legend : Overture

Can you say something about making this “Overture”? Is it motif, did you use cubase?

It is a great piece of music!

Re: Legend : Overture

I appreciate the kind words.  I’m not 100% sure all you want to know, but I can spin a few yarns about this piece.

-Yes, it is all Motif (ES).  I actually sent the whole
thing as one stereo track to Cubase (SL2 lol, its old)
then put on a nice reverb from there.  I like using just
1 stereo track for orchestral pieces because it sounds
more like a live recording from a hall, as opposed to
a totally produced, movie-score sound.

-As for the music itself, it was hard to come up with.
I usually write stuff that I want/feel, then try to make it
sound good.  This time, I had to write something
that sounded good (and accurate for the image I
was trying to portray), then tweak that to add it the things
that I wanted.  Using functional chord progressions, as
well as melodies that fit into those progressions without
creating unwanted dissonances was tough.

-One major theme is the melody (5-1-2-3-4-5) that you hear
in the grand opening after the piano/string intro as well as
melody in the nomad theme (the flute that plays “A#, D#, E#, F#, G#, A#” over the guitar and drum).  This theme is used
in both sections, but is slightly altered in key and
in rhythm.  One way to keep your music from being too
repetitive is to alter an existing theme and create new
situations for that theme to “live” in (new rhythms,
new harmonies around it, etc.).

-Other than that, most of the harmonies I used are tried
and true harmonies from the masters...nothing special
or nothing secret.  It just takes a lot of time and effort
sometimes to get the result you want (trying to mimic
a sound, harmonic progression, or style of a
composer or piece that you like).  Of course, mimic
without stealing :-p

I guess my only real final comment about this piece is that its nothing like most of the things I post.  Most of my suggestions that I mentioned above, I myself, don’t even apply to a lot of my own stuff.  Most of my other music is stuff I wrote for enjoyment only.  This piece I put far more effort and seriousness into (which, the result, is absolutely enjoyable...but its a bit different than “a piece for fun").  Again, I wasn’t sure what you wanted me to say and I’ve said far too much already.  I’m glad you liked it.  /forums/images/icons/smile.gif alt=

Re: Legend : Overture

The music captures your story well. Now get some animation done to it. LOL. Thanks for sharing…
