Hello,

I have successfully hooked up Cubase with Motif using USB MIDI connection.  However, I am unable to play GM MIDI files.

I am having issues with the drum track, which is on Channel 10.

Motif only receives MIDI instructions on channel 1, so is it even possible to play or create GM MIDI files using Cubase sequencer with Motif (USB)?

Please look at this thread:  Issue with Type 0 MIDI file & Motif

(It’s not totally related, but that is how i found out this limitation of Cubase/Motif...) I hope I’m wrong.I would hate to work with Motif sequencer on such complex songs… /forums/images/icons/frown.gif alt=

Re: Playing GM MIDI songs using Cubase LE & Motif

In order to use the Motif with any sequencer, be it the internal or an external sequencer like Cubase LE, you need to place it in one of the SEQUENCER modes.

Press either SONG or PATTERN and select an empty location.

Now the Motif will receive on 16 MIDI channels… Each of the 16 PARTS, accessible via [MIXING] > Track Select [1]-[16], can receive on a different MIDI channel.

IF you are having trouble with your MIDI file selecting the appropriate sounds on Channel 10 it is probably because the author did not include the proper Bank Select commands. What happens is becuase the author was working on a module that only had a GM bank, they forget that other keyboards may not be limited to just GM sounds.

Your Motif is not limited to just GM banks.

So you can either correct the file or simply create a GM MIXING setup that will automatically select the GM bank for the 16 PARTS.

See this thread for more information: A short tutorial on GM files

Re: Playing GM MIDI songs using Cubase LE & Motif

Phil,

Thanks so much.  You are correct.  The download MIDI file was not true GM MIDI.  It assumed i would be working with a pure GM module.

One thing, I would like to point out, in Cubase LE the Program Change does not have the Bank MSB, LSB option edit option.

In order to change the MSB, LSB, I had to insert a Control Change and then the Program Change.  (see the image below)

Any idea what Data 1and Data 2 is for Program Change type?

I will now hook up my Motif and give it a try.

Thanks once again.

Re: Playing GM MIDI songs using Cubase LE & Motif

Bank Select MSB is Controller 0
Bank Select LSB is Controller 32

So the Bank Select Command and Program Change for the GM Acoustic piano looks like this:

http://files.keyfax.com/forums/user-files/434078-BankSelectPC1.JPG

For drums it would be

cc 0 value 127
cc32 value 0
Program Change 1

Program Change does not have a second Data Byte so you don’t need to put anything in Data 2.

Re: Playing GM MIDI songs using Cubase LE & Motif

This must be a limitation of Cubase LE…

It simply wont let me enter CC 32.  (LSB) value, or am i missing something.

I simply don’t see the MSB/LSB option in MIDI configuration. (Based on Cubase help, it only Mentions about BNK and PRG and CHN)

Re: Playing GM MIDI songs using Cubase LE & Motif

Finally, I was able to do insert LSB value.

I noticed I had type BankSel LSB.  It would not let me edit it if i mistyped or misspelled.

I have yet to try it out.  I will do so soon.

At lesat, it looks much better now:

I wish Cubase LE had a drop-down option similar to n-track.  It would have made my life so much easier.  I wonder whether AI 4 is similar to N-Track. (See the drop down CC options to chose.  No need to remember now to spell 127 CC events. )

Thanks for all the help.  I hope there is an easier way to remember how to spell all 128 CC events. Is it in the manual?

Re: Playing GM MIDI songs using Cubase LE & Motif

I’m no expert on Cubase LE but I think all you need to do, if you want to change the controller is highlight the item in the DATA 1 box and change it to “LSB”

If you want to use the Bank item in the Track Inspector then the bank is calculated as follows:

(MSB x 128) + LSB = Bank Number

_ GM normal is MSB = 0 and LSB = 0
Therefore:
(0 x 128) + 0 = Bank Number
0 + 0 = Bank Number = 0

_ GM Drum is MSB = 127 and LSB = 0
Therefore:
(127 x 128) + 0 = Bank Number
(16256) + 0 = Bank Number = 16256

_ Motif banks start with MSB = 63 and LSB = 0, 1, 2, etc for Preset 1, Preset 2, Preset 3 etc.
