I am having difficulties establishing proper connection between Motif ES and my MacBook Pro. I have downloaded the latest Tools and USP driver for ES and was able to install it on my Mac with no problems. I came across one of the old treads which described the setup process as follows:

************************************************************************
Before installing the hardware, make sure you install the drivers, for the MAC OSX system. You can download them from http://www.global.yamaha.com/download/usb_midi/.
1. Click on: USB-MIDI Driver for Mac OS X um110mx.zip.
2. Download and install it.
Set the Motif ES to transmit USB:
1. Press utility/F5/SF4.
2. Make sure MIDI IN/OUT is set to USB.
3. Press store.
Now:
1. Make sure Motif ES is on.
2. Go to audio/midi (if you cannot find it, use the finder, type midi, and select the black and white icon that looks like a portion of a keyboard).
3. When it comes up, click on the midi tab
4. Plug USB cable to the MAC. The Yamaha USB Device icon should pop up.
5. When it comes up, simply set it aside.
6. Now click on add device, and drag it under the ‘Yamaha USB device’icon.
7. You see the up and down arrows, on the icons (you’ll have many on the motif icon. Only use the first two, on the left)? Attach them by clicking actually ON the arrow, and ‘drag’ it (drag and drop) to the same arrow of the other icon (up goes to up and down goes to down). So when you’re finished, the two icons should be attached by a set of parallel ‘lines’.
8. Finished, you can close the audio/midi window.
************************************************************************

I did all this but I am still getting the “bulk receive timeout message” when I try to receive data from my ES. Transmitting the data works fine but when I try to receive the date from ES, I get the error. I have noticed that Motif attempts to send something (transmitting data message apears on the screen for a split of a second) but then it stops right away. My “bulk” interval is set to max, 100ms.

Please could someone help me out?

Thank you!
Dennis

Re: re: Bulk receive timeout error message ...

You make no mention of the Studio Manager version nor do you mention the which Motif ES Editor you are working with… saying the latest (then posting old instructions) could be the problem. Let us know.

Are you using Studio Manager as a standalone program or are you running it inside of Cubase? Let us know.

A Bulk Time Out error is a simple communication problem (most times). But it is necessary to tell us what tools you are attempting to use.

I never had to attach any icons in the Audio/MIDI window to make it work…

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First: Go to SYSTEM PREFERENCES and find the Yamaha USB-MIDI Driver icon. Click it and open the Control Panel. This will show you three windows - the center window should have the number 1 flashing. You will also see the version of the USB-MIDI driver you have installed:

Next: Open Studio Manager > under SM2 click on PREFERENCES and select the MODIFY WORKSPACE Tab. ADD to your Workspace both the Motif ES 6/7/8 (Mult) and Motif ES 6/7/8 (Voice) Edtiors; you must activate the Port for MIDI IN and OUT in STUDIO MANGER.

Click on the “MIDI Settings” Tab (this will appear only when you are using the Studio Manager and Editors in “standalone” mode.) Set the “Yamaha Motif ES Port 1” for both MIDI INPUT PORTS and OUTPUT PORTS. You may opt to set the MIDI THRU = Port 1 - allows you to echo signal back when you need to work with Local Off.
Click APPLY
Click OK

Next Launch the “Motif ES 6/7/8 (Multi)” editor by double clicking its icon in the Workspace.
Go to SETUP
Leave the MIDI IN/OUT REMOTE PORTS = Not Assigned
Set the MIDI IN Port = Yamaha Motif ES Port 1
Set the MID OUT Port = Yamaha Motif ES Port 1
Click OK

Launch the “Motif ES 6/7/8 (Voice)” editor by double clicking its icon in the Studio Manager Workspace.
Go to SETUP
Set the MIDI IN Port = Yamaha Motif ES Port 1
Set the MID OUT Port = Yamaha Motif ES Port 1
Click OK

Re: re: Bulk receive timeout error message ...

Hi Bad Mister,
Thanks for you reply.
I am using Studio Manager in Stand alone mode and you are right, the steps to setup the Audi/MIDI were outdated. I’ve redone my MIDI installation and was able to establish connection with my Mac. But this still doesn’t solve the Bulk Receive problem. Basically my Mac communicates with ES both ways but Voice Editor can’t receive data from ES. I am attaching a file which shows all versions and setups as you requested. Please see attached.
Thanks!
Dennis

P.S.
Btw, how do you put the screenshots directly in your post? I had to attach a file instead? Thanks.

Re: re: Bulk receive timeout error message ...

I guess the next thing to check is the operating system version of your Motif ES.

You do so by powering up while holding down both the [RECORD] + [STORE]

FIRM should be 1.08

If not download and update the operating system verion 1.08 for Motif ES>

Re: re: Bulk receive timeout error message ...

Hi Bad Mister,
Yes, that was the problem. My ES run the old OS.
Since I installed the new version, everything has been working like a charm.
Thank you very much!
