Re: Connecting MO to Cubase 4 for Remote Control
We will make several assumptions (we have to because you did not provide the information).
First, assumption is that you are using PC (we do so because Mac folks always tell you they are using a Mac, first thing).
Next, we will assume you are using USB-MIDI to connect the MO to your computer, because anything else will not allow you to use the Remote Control function.
Next, we will assume that you have downloaded and properly installed the Yamaha USB-MIDI driver for you particular Windows Computer operating system.
In the MO:
Press [UTILITY]
Press [F5] MIDI
Press [SF4] OTHER
Set MIDI IN/OUT = USB
Press [SF2] SWITCH
Set the Local Control = OFF
This Local Control setting will turn OFF the direct communication between the MO keybed and the MO tone engine. In other words, when you press a key the MIDI information will travel OUT via USB to your computer, arrive at a MIDI track in Cubase 4 and be echoed back (Thru’d) to the MO on the MIDI channel you select for that track. This rather indirect route, means that you can determine what MO PART is sounding by activating a Track in Cubase. This allows Cubase to “channelize” the MIDI information.
Setting up the REMOTE CONTROL Function:
While in UTILITY
Press [F4] CTRL ASN
Press [SF4] REMOTE
Set MODE A = CUBASE = Port 4
If you are using STUDIO MANAGER and the MO Editors: Set MODE B = GENERAL = PORT 3
Press [ENTER] to set.
In Cubase 4:
Go to DEVICES > DEVICE SETUP… > MIDI Folder > MIDI PORT SETUP
Make sure in the “IN ALL INPUTS” column that only the “Yamaha MO-1” item is selected. That is unmark 2, 3, and 4. This IN ALL INPUTS is to identify which of the four PORTS will be sending musical data (note-on events, controller events, and tempo events).
Go to REMOTE DEVICES folder
If necessary click the “+” mark in the upper left corner to add an appropriate Control protocol. You can use “Mackie Control” as the remote protocol.
Set the MIDI IN PORT for Mackie Control = Yamaha MO-4
Set the MIDI OUT PORT for Mackie Control = Yamaha MO-4
Port 4 being the Remote Port you set in the MO
Click APPLY
Now when you press the REMOTE button on the front panel of the MO, it will address Cubase 4 via PORT 4. Because you have Local Control OFF, you will only hear the MO when you have created a MIDI Track in Cubase 4, and you have set the MIDI IN to “In ALL Inputs” or “Yamaha MO-1” (which we defined as the only input for music data). and you have set the MID OUT of the track to “Yamaha MO-1” and have selected a MIDI channel.
If any of our assumptions were wrong, or you need additional information, let us know ...
