on the “Mega” acoustic guitars “nylon, twelve string, steel string” theres an effect where if you press the keys a certain way it makes a guitar effect that only comes when you move your hands across the strings to change chords. it can be heard after the the second D of “Rain After The Game” demo. Does anyone know what I’m talking about and how to do this?

Re: Guitar “Fret Sliding” sound on Mega acoustics XS8

Welcome to the forums

In, for example, the Mega Nylon VOICE (PRE 8: 081(F01)) is a seven Element Voice. This means that seven different multi-sampled Waveforms make up the Voice. Each Element performs a different function within the Voice… and not all are sounding at the same time. On the contrary - they only sound under specific criteria determined by how and/or where you touch the keyboard.

Each Element is set to respond to a specific Note Limit Range and a specific key-on Velocity Limit. Some are restricted from sounding by the Motif XS’s innovative XA CONTROL (Expanded Articulation Control function)

Element 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 will sound when you play a key between the lowest possible note C-2, and B5
Element 7 will sound only when you play a key higher than C6

But it is the Velocity ranges that really determine what is happening here:
Element 1 will only respond to a velocity range of 1-60
Element 2 will only respond to a velocity range of 61-75
Element 3 will only respond to a velocity range of 76-90
Element 4 will only respond to a velocity range of 91-105
Element 5 will only respond to a velocity range of 106-120
Element 6 will only respond to a velocity range of 121-127

Element 7 will respond to all velocities 1-127 (but only when you press a key north of C6.

The slide to a note is accomplished by Element 5… so only when you press a note precisely in the velocity range of 106-120 will the slide to a note be heard.

It is very difficult for a human being to play with such precise velocity ranges (on purpose). So the MEGA Voices are designed to be played by special arpeggio data that is specifically mapped to get specific sounds - it does so because the arpeggio data is preset to particular velocities and notes.

Element 1 is an Open note, Element 2 is a Dead note, Element 3 is a Mute note, Element 4 is a Hammered note, Element 5 is the Slide, Element 6 is a Harmonic, Element 7 is the raking/scraping noise of strumming.

Try the different arpeggios. If you record the data you can see how notes have specific velocities to go and “get” a specific sound.

Try a VOICE like PRE 2: 054(D06) “Nylon Slide Vel”
This Voice is designed for a human to play. Here some of the sound effects of playing an actual guitar are mapped so that you have a greater degree of real time control - basically so you can play the Voice without being a android like, Data from Star Trek or some kind of robot able to play with exact velocities. It is virtually impossible to play the Mega Voices normally. In a sequence (like in “Rain After the Game” you could go back and edit the Event list to insert specific effects at specific moments in the performance.

The Element 1 is the Open guitar sound and is mapped from the bottom of the keyboard up to B5 and is set to play most of the time: velocity = 1-120

Element 2 is Slide guitar sound and is mapped from the bottom of the keyboard up to B5 but is set to play only when the velocity = 121-127

So with these two elements you can control the Slide based on how hard you play the keys.

Element 3 is the Mute note and will only occur if you simultaneously press the [AF1] Assignable Function 1 button. So for the random muted or swallowed note you can press [AF1] with your left hand while performing a run or chord with your right hand

Element 4 is the Harmonic and it will only occur if you simultaneously press the [AF2] Assignable Function 2 button.

Element 5 is the Key Off sound and will occur when you release a note in the note limit range of F2 - B5

Element 6 is a scraping sound also set so it only occurs when you release a note, in the note limit region of E1-C3, and only for notes precisely played a velocity of 100… so this guitar flaw, tends to happen on its on - not when you intend it to happne (sort of just like the real thing)… So only when the Note-Limit, Velocity Limit and Release (Key-Off) criteria are met will the Element 6 scraping sound be heard

Element 7 is another sound effect, and like Element 6 it only occurs under specific conditions… C3-B5, Velocity 34-110, and only as Key Off sound

Element 8 is lots of guitar sound effects you can “get” when you wish by simply playing above C6 at any velocity.

This 8 Element guitar sound is not only fun and expressive to play but give you a chance to get realism like never before out of playing the sound. Some of the ‘noises’ are under your direct control and others occur by serendipity - like out of no where… Spend some time exploring and playing this Voice.

Hope that helps take a peek behind the magic. For more on how to explore Voices and learn about the XS, visit the Motif XS Home Page (here on the site, link at the top of this page) and go to the Behind the Manual page to find articles on different aspects of the XS.
