Re: Instrument ranges?
Bumpy was a fabulous guy to perform with and a great friend. Very serious and very “Old School” when it came to music. He didn’t write “quick charts” either. He’d use codas, but most of his charts were written out to include the dynamic changes to the “basic” patterns as the piece progressed. I’ve tried duplicating what he did with my patterns on machines but....well you know how well “that” works.

Re: Instrument ranges?
another good teacher is to just listen to records. like Kenny G for example. if you can play his song on your Mo (given your playing skills) you can get a feel of the range of his soprano sax.

Yes. Whatever he does, don’t do yourself. |

He Shoots, He Scores! I happen to play the soprano saxophone. I cringe, but respond with gratitude, when someone after a concert says “You sound just like Kenny G!” The only similarity I wish to share with him is his paygrade.

Re: Instrument ranges?
Wouldn’t we all, LOL? I never begrudge a fellow musician for making a buck. FWIW, Kenny G’s bad rap comes from a lot of envy and jealousy. In his defense, Kenny G has never really misrepresented himself--- he has always categorized his music as “pop instrumental” rather than jazz (thankfully). The criticism about his intonation is just, IMHO. I do believe Kenny likes to blow just a tad bit sharp on his soprano, to my ears. Personally, I dug his earlier, more inspired playing on the Jeff Lorber albums, where he played more tenor and flute.

Re: Instrument ranges?
You mean he’s never really called himself a musician? You mean he’s always called himself a huckster?

Re: Instrument ranges?
scotch, go back and listen to those albums I’ve mention and report back. BTW, Kenny has degrees in accounting and finance in addition to music performance. Don’t hate a guy for exploiting his success. I might not dig what Kenny G is doing now, but I certainly dig what Kenneth Gorelick did on those Jeff Lorber records and that bitchin’ cassette tape of the University of Washington big band that Kenny was a member of. Like I said, most of the hatred towards Kenny is fueled by envy and jealousy........ |

Hmmm. I’m not sure how to interpret that, but if at face value, uhm, Thanks… But I doubt it… /forums/images/icons/wink.gif alt= |
