Hey all, I’ve had my XS for over a year and I’ve been playing in mono. Well, today I played it for the first time in STEREO...and the sounds were AMAZING!!!!! Stereo sound adds so much life to the voices!! It’s like a brand new instrument! I would recommend all of you to stop doing your synth a disservice by playing in mono! Go get yourself a stereo system...you won’t regret it!!! |

Re: Played My Motif In Stereo!
Great thread. I can’t agree more. You should practice in stereo, monitor yourself live in stereo, and run true stereo live. It is simply not the same synth in mono.

Re: Played My Motif In Stereo!
What took me so long? Good question. First of all, I wasn’t very knowledgable in the mono/stereo department. The thing that surprised me was that the people in guitar center seem to not be knowledgable either! They sold me the Motif XS and a 4-channel MONO amplifier with 2 instrument cables!! So, naturally, I figured they were selling me exactly what I needed for my instrument to sound its best! I thought to myself, “They sold me two cables, so I must have to use both of them!” So, I had plugged a L & R cable from my XS to my what-I-thought-was a STEREO amp!!! Boy was I wrong! It’s not till I finally got fed up with the bad sound that I consulted someone here on the forum (about a year later! Thanks Spongebob!). And that’s when I found out that first: I was compromising the sound by plugging both the L & R cables into 1 channel! And that second: I had a MONO amp! So, I went out and got me a stereo system. And that’s what took me so long!! I’m MUCH MUCH happier with the sounds now!

Re: Played My Motif In Stereo!
Actually most keyboard amps are mono, not to mention guitar and bass amps. Guitar Center doesn’t always hire savy salesman either.

Re: Played My Motif In Stereo! Hmmmm We’ve done over 1,000 performances and NOT ONCE have we ran mono! ha ha Help me understand this… We were using a Motif ES8 live every nite for years… The sound guy would ALWAYS take the signal out of the L/Mono. So should he have used a seperate DI for both left and right channels? Then what happens back at the house board? Do the pan the left channel left, and the right channel right? Help me understand this… I am also monitoring my Motif with a Fishman Loudbox which has a Channel 1 and Channel 2 output via a Single XLR… Would that be Stereo? Thanks for the clarification! : ) |

Re: Played My Motif In Stereo!
No. in order to hear your Motif-series in stereo you would need to hook up a pair of cables to the “L/mono” and “R” outputs and send that to two direct boxes and then discreetly deliver the signal of one to the left speaker and the other to the right....

Re: Played My Motif In Stereo!
Yeah .. I fight this with sound guys all the time. They really hate to run stereo FOH - I think they are stuck on the idea that if it is stereo it will sound bad to people who are on one side or the other. It’s hard to change their mind - but I have found that the best way to get the sound guy on board is to tell them my main sound is B3 with leslie and it has to be stereo. That seems to wake up something in their brains (if they’re old enough to know what a leslie is) and get them thinking of a true stereo sound rather than a bunch of mono sounds panned to various L-R locations.

Re: Played My Motif In Stereo! If I had roadies and played on big enough stages to accomidate the space I’d play with stereo monitors all the time. At least the main PA mix gets a stereo signal so it’s fat out front. |

Re: Played My Motif In Stereo!
I’m really amazed that one would even consider playing a synth in mono. Come on!
