okay i’ve looked at the specs and it’s obvious what we gained in features with the ES.  my question is what features do we lose?  it seems this always happens when synths get redesigned, you gain some new features but often lose some really cool *smaller* features from the older generation.  so my question to yamaha is what got chopped out and didnt make it into the MOTIF ES?

i have to tell you i’m very excited about picking up the MOTIF ES i’m just wondering how much i’ll really be able to get for my MOTIF 8 come september.

Re: What are we going to be missing?

Well here’s what you won’t find in the ES:

64mb of RAM max (it’s now 512)
Insert effect limitation (now you have 8 insert effects available in mix, plus EQ for each track, plus Master Effect).
The same waveROM (it’s a lot better)
The same envelope speed (the envelopes are much faster now)
The same filter sound (the filters sound better).
The same number of arpeggios and patterns (it’s WAY more with the ES)
No control for Digital Performer (with ES you can control Digital Performer).

Re: What are we going to be missing?

No.
You still have to go through a computer to do so.

Re: What are we going to be missing?

The filter and amp envelopes are much faster too

DavePolich,

my understanding is that envelope points are defined by time intervals… what do you mean by “faster”, faster reaction when rate of change is high?

Faster envelopes

By faster envelopes I mean an audible change in how fast they are. The only way I can explain it is, if I want things to sound more “pointy” and “sharp” now I can achieve that better with the ES. As for the math, hey I have no idea. I only know how it sounds. I know the math is there. you’d need to talk to a software engineer about that.

Let’s put it this way, while I love and still use my Motif, I’ve always felt that Roland envelopes were more “precision” sounding. That feeling is gone now, the new ES envelopes have that “precision” I was looking for.

Re: Faster envelopes

I think it has to do with internal precision of the chip… very well, one more nice feature to consider ! /forums/images/icons/wink.gif alt= Thanks.

Re: What are we going to be missing?

Sharper envelopes are always a cool thing. You can always slow down an envelope, but you can’t make one more “sharp” or “pointy” as Dave puts it. And for some types of music, these types of fast envelopes could be really beneficial. Thanks Yamaha!
