Hi All,

Boy, I have gone full circle after owning and selling a
plg150-dx, a tx81Z, a tx802, a DX7(w/ e!) and now selling my SY77… All this to avoid selling my ES7… a long story… but anyway I finally decided to downsize and am selling my ES7 and SY77 for an ES6. (Obtaining a Kurz PC1se made the switch to ES6 possible).  But I really want to retain FM synthesis in my arsenal.

My question is; with the PLG150-dx, does it support dual mode as the DX7II did? In other words can I layer and/or split two (or more) PLG150-dx patches at the same time using an ES6? I realize with each layer, one looses the number of notes available to play as polyphony is limited to 16.

If the PLG150-DX can not, I will seriously consider a TX802 or TG77. But I’d prefer to use a plug card as opposed to lugging a rack synth.

Thanks
Peace

Re: PLG150-DX. Dual mode?

As far as I know the DX card can only play a patch at the same time, with 16 voices.

But then you can fit up to three plg cards into your motif /forums/images/icons/smile.gif alt=

Re: PLG150-DX. Dual mode?

I think you’re right Albert. Thanks. I also just read the first line in the “YAMAHA Power User” for the PLG150-DX says
“The PLG150-DX is a single part board”.

I think I’ll pass on the plug board and go for a TX802 or TG77 and run it back into the A/D input of the ES6 to avoid having to use a sub-mixer.
Hmmm but good point… I could load two plg150dx boards as opposed to a rack… would I be able to assign them to the same midi channel for layering? Gotta be right?

Thanks again.

Well, I’ve decided to go for the TX802 (again) in leu of the PLG150-DX since a fair deal came along.

Peace. Bob <><

Re: PLG150-DX. Dual mode?

Sorry, I was on vacation when you posted your question. The PLG150-DX can support UNISON mode, which is one of the thing that was different about the DX7IIFD engine from the original DX engine… where you could fold the engine on itself and get lower polyphony but much richer sounds… UNISON POLY would reduce the 16 note polyphony to 4 notes but the sound would be rich in timbre - this was useful for big glorious sound effects.

When you mention Dual Mode for splits and layers, that would have to be accomplished with the PLG150-DX by inserting two boards (or a third board even)…

The TG77 was the a generation beyond the DX, DXIIFD, TX802, as it added new algorithms and new routing possibilities as it was an AFM engine

Re: PLG150-DX. Dual mode?

Hi Bad_Mister,

Thanks for the clarification. I went ahead last week and picked up a TX802 to replace my SY77. I really don’t need the 61 keys any more (as I went from ES7 to ES6) and FM suits the bill for me. I really didn’t take advantage of the AFM in the SY77. But I really needed the dual mode for some of my FM creations and the AWM in the SY77 is blown away by the ES6.

Thanks again for the response.
Peace. Bob <><
