“MIDI Machine Control (MMC) is a protocol that controls an MMC-equipped
remote device via MIDI. SONAR lets you use MMC to start and stop
playback and recording on remote MIDI devices such as tape decks, video
recorders, and even other software packages. If you have several MMCcontrollable
devices in your studio, assign each a unique Unit ID so that
MMC commands can be addressed to a particular device.”

How do I set the Unit ID on the Motif ES?

Re: MMC Sonar 7 and Unit ID

Set Sonar to send MIDI Clock OUT information on the port feeding the Motif ES… this is found in OPTIONS > PROJECT OPTIONS > SYNC

Set the Motif ES to receive MIDI clock from an external MIDI device and set Sequencer Control to IN
Press [UTILITY]
Press [F5] MIDI
Press [SF3] SYNC
Set MIDI SYNC = MIDI
Set SEQ CTRL = IN

The Motif ES will now follow stop/start/conintue commands from Sonar. If you are in SONG mode, it will also follow SONG POSITION POINTER commands to locate measures.

A Unit ID number is not necessary as you define the port on which the messages are sent.

If you want to use the front panel of the Motif ES to control Sonar you would need to setup the Motif ES REMOTE CONTROL function and set SONAR’s Control Surface functons. The Front panel of the Motif ES can be used to start/stop, arm tracks, control the Console, etc., etc. in Sonar.

In the Motif ES
Press [UTILITY]
Press [F4] CTRL ASN
Press [SF ] REMOTE
Select “SONAR” as the protocol for MODE A = SONAR = PORT 4

If you are using a multiple port MIDI interface (USB or mLAN) you can use PORT 4 to communicate with SONAR when you press the [REMOTE ON/OFF] button

I don’t remember how to set Sonar 7 for control surfaces but it should also be found under OPTIONS… you want to use Mackie Control protocol and set it up for IN and OUT communication on port 4

This will allow you to use the front panel of the ES to navigate Sonar - there is list of controllable parameters for Sonar in your Motif ES Manual and/or Data List booklet.

Hope that helps
