Hi! I’m planning to buy a used Motif Rack ES. I’ll be using it in addition to an 88-key Roland Fantom X8. My question is: isn’t it typically “better” to have a second controller, dedicated to your rackmount tone generators, such as the Rack ES, in addition to your “main” keyboard/workstation? I could’ve had a mint-condition ES8 for the same price I’ll be paying for both a Rack ES and a controller, but space is becoming an issue since I’ll also have the 88-key Fantom in my set-up.

Weighted keys are NOT a requirement, and a 61- or 76-key controller is just fine. I’ve been eyeing the E-MU Xboard 61 and Korg 61 controllers as candidates for driving my Rack ES. Anyone here have any other preferences in controllers? Are there any particular controllers that are more well suited, for whatever reason, for use specifically with the Rack ES than those I mentioned? Any comments are appreciated! Thanks.

Re: Favorite “second” controllers to use with RACK ES?

Okay, now I’m looking at the Edirol PCR800 61-key controller. Ooohhh, so many buttons and lights! Cool! But since it’s a Roland product, I wonder if it has any templates for Yamaha rackmount generators?

Anyway, cool-looking controller, and as a side benefit, its controls match the ergonomics of the Fantom X8 I’m planning to get.
