Hi guys,
Lately I’ve bought a M-Rack ES and I wonder how to have one voice in one track, second voice in another track, etc. , so that I could write down notes in matrix edit and hear playback of several motif voices in Logic.
Should I do it in voice or multi mode? Only on midi channels? How to assign m-rack voices to separate tracks?
I appreciate much any advice.

Re: m-rack + logic

1> you need to be in Multi Mode.
2> you need an instrument object for the Motif Rack ES.
I’ll see if I can find one.

Re: m-rack + logic

thanks Tones,
I’ve created new instrument, called it Motif2, then I put one voice to Motif1 and then I would like to put other voice to Motif2 track, but when I change the voice it is assigned to Motif1 and Motif2.
What should I do to have different voices on Motif1 and Motif2 tracks in Logic?

Re: m-rack + logic

I am going to jump in here since it has been a couple of
days and you have not received an answer.  I was going
to mention that you need to create a “multi instrument”
object. If you have just created an instrument object it will
not work since what you are trying to do is have multiple
voices on different tracks. That is why it is called a multi
instrument.

I have not ever worked with a rack synth though I am fairly
sure it should be about the same as the keyboard type.

I have made a couple of videos that should help you get this
going. The links are good but when you click on the link for
the file another page opens up and you have to enter in a
code that is pictured. Look towards the bottom of the page
for the links.

I have just noticed your reply Phil. Thanks.
I am downloading the videos at the moment and will have a look.
Will let you know if it works on my board.

Re: m-rack + logic

Phillip,
you are great guy!
Thanks a lot indeed.

I still don’t know how to set up my own bank (user bank in multi voice) and how to edit and change any voice parameters like eq, delay, reverb etc.

I would be grateful if you could desribe it in few sentences.

Re: m-rack + logic

I can do even better than that. Just go to the yamaha synth site

http://www.yamahasynth.com/download/motif_series.html

and download the Studio Manager AND the multivoice editor
for your OS. They are so cool. After installing them and setting
them up(you may have to read the manual a bit, I know I did)
you can launch the SM then load the multivoice editor with your
rack on line and edit the sounds and effects in real time. It was
so cool last night I was showing the key board to a friend. He was
playing it and of course did not know how to switch sounds so
instead of reaching over and hitting the buttons on the keyboard to
change the patches, I would just click on the editor on my computer
screen and the changes would be sent to the keyboard with maybe
1 second delay. Pretty much everything is editable from the computer.
I was even changing arps on screen.

You first need to upload all the banks to the editor and
save it. It is easy just look for the midi icon with the
arrow pointing left. Then choose “all” from the pull down
menu.
I am glad you were able to use those videos. Have fun

Re: m-rack + logic

Wow! Man, this is really cool!
Now I am amazed of milions of sound creating possibilities!
Perfect!

The only thing that doesn’t work correctly is that when I change voices in Multi Part Editor, the PROGRAM number on a track in Logic (bank + voice number that is below midi channel number) doesn’t change. Is it possible to set so that it would change?
(not sure if you know what I mean..., sorry but I am not english native speaker /forums/images/icons/smile.gif alt= )

Re: m-rack + logic

Actually those two are not supposed to talk to each other. The editor
is only supposed to be a total recall device with Cubase. (Since Apple
owns Logic and Yamaha owns Steinberg who makes Cubase it is
kind of like an arranged marrige. You have to live together but you
do not go out of your way for the other one sometimes).

So you use the editor to send tweaks to the rack. Then you can change
your patches in logic by using the mouse to click and hold on the bank
and patch numbers then drag to what ever bank number or patch you
are looking for. Still much quicker than using the Motif. The idea being
that you do not have to touch the rack for any reason.

Re: m-rack + logic

phillipK,
Hey man, downloaded your videos on setting up the rack in Logic.  Kinda stumped in one area though, and I need your help.  I followed your videos word for word, but where you were entering the MSB and LSB values when doing custom definitions, I’m only getting to put in one value (MSB only).  Where did I go wrong?

Re: m-rack + logic

I put a small video up to show how to change the settings.
There is no sound so if you still have a question let me know.

Re: m-rack + logic

Thanks so much for the tutorial videos!  They helped a lot, but I am still having one issue, not sure if this is Logic or Motif Related.

To preface, I am using logic express 7 with a Motif 8.

I am running midi out of the Motif, in addition to audio through a firewire solo.

I want to be able, as the first poster stated, to put different MIDI sounds from my yamaha into the grid on logic on separate tracks, but whenever I go to change the track, the sound changes on all previously recorded tracks.  Also, if I want to record audio, and I switch the sound on the motif, the sound switches in my midi track as well.

I followed your first video exactly, and that is how I first got logic to use midi sounds from the motif bank.  However, your final step where you selected “create with next instrument” from the pull down.  When I go to the track pull down, that is no an avaliable option.  In addition, I cannot get the R record button to come up next to any tracks besides Audio ones, therefore I was unable to arm it to record at the beginning of the process as you were.

Any help would be most appreciated.

take care
