I never understood how the DX7 used it’s voices.I know that you can have up to 16 voices, but what does six operaters have to do with the 16 voices. What is the differrence between an operator and an a osscilator. I use to have a PLG DX board but I couldn’t edit it much because I didn’t have Windows. I also couldn’t get to all of the voices that it had. The manual said that it had 900 voices, but I only could get a few of them. When I sold my Motif it included the DX7 board.I miss both of them and if Yamaha doesn’t come out with a new synth in the next few months then I might go with an ES RACK and two PLG boards. |

Re: PLG DX board poly?
An Operator is a bit more complex than just the tone generator portion (or oscillator)… It includes the oscillator - a sine wave generator (that is under the influence of pitch and modulation data from other operators), it also includes an amplifier and an envelope generator.

Re: PLG DX board poly?
The other aspect of the DX is the collection of “algorithms”, but my recollection is that these correspond primarily to the routing of the internal blocks of the FM synthesis engine (how many of each, what order, effects, etc.). I haven’t looked at that spec in a few months now so hope I am not crossing terminology.

Re: PLG DX board poly? When I get another PLG DX board I will just stick with the presets and maybe download some sounds. I could access some of the sounds, but I wished that you could easily get to all of the sounds like you could with the PLG AN board. |

Re: PLG DX board poly?
The PLG150-AN board has 256 Board Voices in 2 banks (036/000 and 036/001) and the User Board Voice bank is 036/002. Each bank contains 128 Sounds.

Re: PLG DX board poly? Thanks for the information. I remember that some of the Fm voices can be very comlpexed, especialy the sound effects. They made some sounds that I didn’t think Fm could make. |
