There is an outside chance I’ll be relocating from Singapore to Sydney… keyboards in tow.

Can anyone from Down Under point me to a local muso site or two? Once the work and family thing is settled I’ll need to find a gig with a good cover band.

And what’s this about gear costing 40% more?

Thanks!

Re: OT: Relocating to Sydney

On the plus side, you can buy chewing gum everywhere here…

I’m on the NSW/Victoria border so I’m not having any local knowledge of the Sydney scene.

I’m racking my brains trying to remember where I’m sure I read about or saw a website that is for just the purpose you’re talking about. I’ll scout around and see if I can find it.

Last I heard, music gear gets about 30% import duty plus 10% GST so there’s a bit of a sting with most gear that can’t all be blamed on the vendors.

An ES6 can be be had for $2999 (under 3 grand - wow!!!) whereas I’ve yet to see DX and AN PLG’s for under about $600 from any credible source (what are they worth in Singapore?).

A relatively small market/low volumes for more pro-level gear and a widely spread population probably adds to the cost as well.

Ignoring list prices and shopping around makes things look better. A stronger dollar in the past couple of years has helped, but it’s been more against the $US than the Yen so some US made gear like Mackie has been better in recent times.

I’m half seriously considering flying to Singapore for a night or two primarily to pick up a few small bits of PC and music hardware. Are there any reliable places I can check online to see prices etc?

Re: OT: Relocating to Sydney

Thanks Wayne,

What specifically are you looking for in Singapore? Let me know and I can give you a URL or an email addy for the shop. You can get almost everything here, roughly the same price as the USA.

I already have (or have ordered) all I need music-wise for the time being, with the exception of a new mixer and some stage monitors. If I make the move I’ll probably pick up the mixer here (A&H MixWiz3), but get the monitors in Oz (Mackies. Seems OK pricing in Sydney).

And I’m brushing up on my Midnight Oil covers!!!

Re: OT: Relocating to Sydney

I found one list of “players wanted” in the classifieds at the Venue Music site-

Also-

Also if you haven’t already found it, a good place in my price hunting up that way is Turramurra Music-

They have generally equalled or bettered the best prices I’ve been quoted between Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne.

Pro Audio in Canberra are also quite good in my dealings with them over the years (the site is not extensive but they will chase up just about anything)-

I wish someone around here would do some covers like the Oils. I’m dying out here! I’m tentatively considering a shift to the Newcastle area - Sydney’s too big, crowded and expensive for me. I just want to get somewhere on the coast where there’s cleaner air and some decent entertainment.

Re: OT: Relocating to Sydney

here in melbourne there’s MELBAND, which has a forum http://www.melband.com.au/modules.php?name=Forums
in which bands/individuals put up posts to look for other muso’s. surely Sydney has a similar web-page, I’d have a search for that too and put up an ad describing exactly what/who u r looking for (or maybe you’ll choose to follow-up on someone else’s post)…

Re: OT: Relocating to Sydney

I saw that one but I haven’t seen the same sort of thing for the Sydney area. There might be one somewhere.

Maybe Melbourne is finally getting the upper hand /forums/images/icons/smile.gif alt= .
